If your using a ratchet it is simple and easy to always be sure.

Just make sure you have the ratchet set to loosen before you start, before you climb under the bike.

Then it doesn't matter what what kind of acrobatics you do, the ratchet is already set.

This. I use a ratchet and ALWAYS loosen something before I get upside down and work then it is already set for the correct way.

That's what I thought at first but had to go back and re read it.
He's not at the kick stand bolt, he only said he was laying on the kick stand side of the bike. He is still at the rear bolt.
EDIT: Wait. Was Arps just saying good luck WHEN you get to the kick stand bolt (cause clearly the socket trick won't work). Sorry I'm a little slow.

Anyways, great tip on preparing the ratchet first.

Re:Dumb Question Alert 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Questions first:
1. Is the bike on a bike jack or is it on the kick stand?

2. Are you working on the crankcase oil plug at the front or are you working on the oil tank plug at the rear?

3. If you are working on the oil tank plug why are you working on the shifter side of the bike rather than the rear brake side which is closer?

I have a feeling this simple task could get really complicated quickly.

I do both plugs from the left side as I don't want to have to get up more than once.

I always thought that getting up more than once was a good thing. My wife seems to agree with me on this point.
