My first oil change I cut the 17mm combination wrench. Then I went to a 14mm magnetic plug... the wrench was not as long. Then I bought a jack, that solved alot of clearance problems for maintenance functions.

I agree about the jack - it makes lots of things easier and saves the back a bit too.

That does it! I am going to get a jack. The clearance underneath the bike was the only bad thing about changing the oil!
Cheers,

Understand the dynamics for the oil change, but is the transfer case oil another monster or will the oil change also take care of this fluid ?

The xfer case oil is gear oil, poured in through the large slotted round cover on the right side. You'll find lots of threads about that one. The drain bolt sits underneath the case, facing the ground. Not hard to change at all.

That article says to add a total of 5.3 Qts. 3.2 of which goes directly into the crankcase via the plug behind the rear cylinder. This seems to be the procedure for a bone dry engine, like after an engine rebuild. Here is the article for the normal oil change procedure.

I changed mine out last weekend, went with mobil 1 20-50 and followed the avove mentiond diretcions and every thing went very smooth.
Question, am I supposed to change the gear oil / transfer case oil too when changing to a full syn oil???
You don't have to change the transfer case oil unless it is time or you just want to. I elected to change my transfer case lube to synthetic when I changed my engine oil to synthetic, only because I wanted synthetic in my transfer case as well. The transfer case lube change interval is initially at 600 miles or 1 month then, check level at 8000 miles or 12 months then, change at 16000 miles or 24 months thereafter. Note: some people say they use engine oil in the transfer case however, I do not. The owners manual says to use SAE 80 GL4 Hypoid gear oil. I went with Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 for my transfer case. It is rated for GL5 but Amsoil says it can also be used in applications requiring GL4 (backwards compatible).

ok, that helps. I just went to syn for the oil and I have 7050 on the bike now. I'm heading out to OK to see Dad this sat and just got nervous reading the above and though I may have missed something. Thanks

To clarify, the transfer case and the engine do not share the same oil. They are separate systems. Transfer case takes SAE 80 GL4 Hypoid Gear oil per the owners manual. However, I use Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 in mine. See my previous post.
