These are made here (USA), use the plug search (1600 & 1700 are the same thread). It will give you a choice of a 17mm or 13mm head.

If you don't have paypal, or trouble with the site, 1-888-578-3851.
Don't forget to order extra crush washers, they offer copper and aluminium.

The freaking dealer mechanic buggered my engine bolt, I got it off and back on, but I'm going to have to change the bolt next time I change oil.
I know they did it because they are the only ones that changed the oil since the bike was new. He rounded off one corner, I know I didn't do it because I caught the rounded corner before I put the wrench on it.

I think a few people here changed out their oil bolts out. There are two 17mm and they swapped them out for magnetic ones and I think those are 15mm. I haven't done that but you might as well.

I picked up a couple at AutoZone when I did mine recently.
I told them 14mm x 1.50, magnetic, oil drain plug. The 1.50 is the important part.
If I remember correctly, the head on the new plugs was actually 13mm.
A new sealing washer comes with the bolt.

Same here but used copper washers (per Curt's suggestion )

Re:Changing your oil is easy 5 Years, 9 Months ago
Have been using the oil change method posted in this tech topic for all my oil changes(2001 1600 Silverado). Always easy to do, good results. However, last oil change, I used a NAPA filter for the first time (have used KN-303 and Fram before). Everything fine, except now the oil level is always high in the oil tank. Sometimes, it drops into the normal range after I start the engine, sometimes it does not. Very confusing and concerning. Since the only difference between this oil change and successful previous ones was the choice of filter, I am going to drain all of the oil out again, switch to a Fram filter and put in another batch of fresh oil. Any other suggestions from the Forum?

Don't do it!

If you changed, used a new filter, and put only 4 qts in, you're GOOD!

Do you use the proper checking method? Run 'til hot, at least 15 minutes. Let idle for at least 30 seconds, with no blips of the throttle. Stand it straight up, and then check the stick.

If it's anywhere on the hatch pattern, you're good.

I wouldn't go by the stick anyway. If you changed, and added only 4 qts... run it.

There's a question I keep wondering about. Its this, if using a synthetic oil like Amsoil 20x50 is it necessary or better to use a oil filter made for synthetic oils or would anyone do ya??

Questcap,

Thanks for the reply. Everything is the same as all of the other oil changes. This started when I changed it last time, using the NAPA filter. Same procedure as always to check the oil, same as the one you describe. Just really weird that the oil level suddenly is screwy. Since new, the oil levle before, right after and between oil changes has always been right in the middle of the hash marks. Think I'm going to still change oil and filter today, just to see what happens. Hopefully, the peace of mind if it takes care of this annoyance will be worth the $25!!

Nah, the filter can't tell the difference. Just use a good one.

I hate that Wal*Mart discontinued their SuperTech store brand filters by Champion. They were both good and cheap. I have a few in store for the next few seasons.

Jeg,

If you can get piece of mind for $25... it's probably worth it to you.

Go for it... but, what'll you do if you get the same result???

Cross that one when I get to it!! Fingers crossed. I spoke by phone with the Yamaha maechanic who looked after my Road* for years before I moved 6 hours away. Excellent mechanic, very knowledgable. He felt strongly that they symptoms were indicative of the NAPA filter being the problem Said that as long as the oil was leaving the tank at some point, it meant the engine was being lubricated, and he said to just leave it, but...I can't ride knowing that it never used to be that way for 40,000 miles worth of oil changes, and it suddenly has changed, so I'll be changing it out tonight.
