Stage three drilling will give you louder pipes

The reduced back pressure will rob you of some low end torque

Doc, Muskey,anyone
Is it really necessary to remove the mufflers to do a stage 1 on a
06 Silverado? What would be the drawback of leaving them on to do
this? I realize that you would have to remove the metal chips but
a good shopvac should do the trick. Also I have a good M.C. jack so the
height should not be a problem.
Thanks
Denny

I left mine on when I did it. I was worried about the metal shavings in there so I just left it running while I drilled! Every once in awhile I had my wife rev the engine just to make sure all the shavings were out. Would recommend wearing safety glasses for that last part.

Does anyone know the best way to remove the cone from the muffler. I read one post on how to remove it but I am nervous that I might mess up something. How hard is it to break the weld of the cone.

please reply with any advice.
thanks, yamahog7

Some people seem to have more problems that others.

You can either use a dremel or a hole saw to cut the welds. It's only welded on the inside to the exhaust pipe in the middle of the can.

Hello DocShadow, thanks for replying,
If I used a hole saw , would i use one the size of the outer cone diameter or what size would you recommend?

You use one just a little larger than the inner exhaust pipe.

You want to cut the inside of the cone, not the outside.

Ok, this might sound stupid, but you are talking about the small pipe in the center of the cone? i just seen on a post where they said they used 1 1/2 inch hole saw. that would be the inside pipe, what about the outside of the cone, will it come off easy once the inner part is cut or what?, sorry if my ??? sound stupid, i just want to be sure.
thanks

Outside of the cone is not attached .... only the inside is welded.

I just did the stage one to my bike a few weeks ago and I must say it sounds pretty good. If you look inside the pipe where the cone meets the center pipe, the weld is right there about 1 inch long. I used a dremmel tool and the cone came out no problem.I was pretty nervous doing this as this is my first bike and didn't want to screw it up. The drilling was the easy part. I used a small drill bit first and then used the larger one. I then used a shop vac to clear the shavings. Hope this helps.
