Gauging interest in a Northern Rockies M&G; 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago
A couple of people at NW Starfest talked about a possible Montana ride. I'm looking at a few different day rides around here. Maybe two loops, or a longer ride with an overnight along the way.

I'm willing to put in the planning and survey some routes. But I wanted to see how many think that they would actually show up. There aren't many members around here, so for most people it would be a ride just to get here.

Day rides around here can be long for some people. 200-300 miles is typical for me. We have some great scenic highways, but lots of back roads are dirt/gravel. So it would take some planning for the good stuff.

So let me know what you think. Who knows. Maybe the Beartooth highway will be in your future.

Hey Darrel, I'd be a 50/50 depending on the route. One night stop in Spokane or Coeur d' Alene and then to Helena. Wouldn't even have to be a loop, but just some cool riding, scenic stops, bull shit and comradery! My wife and I have HD friends in Bozeman also, so would make a nice trip out of it.

Hey Darrell!
I'm with Steve on the 50/50 thing, yes I would love to do it, but, depends on how it works out schedule wise.
And I'm going to shoot you a pm, keep an eye out for it.

Scenery we don't have here, sweeping mountain curves, low traffic, 40-60 mph speeds, dry and sunny, good food, dancing babes!

I'm interested! About 950 miles to Helena from here. I would need a motel stay as I can't tent anymore. What to see? Like Shores said scenery, food, and dancing babes!! July would probably work best for time wise. Possibly right before Sturgis of right after as a second choice. When is the weather the most stable in your area?

Probably July and August would be best. June is typically our rainiest month. But that varies.

If we do the Beartooth highway then I think it would have to be late July or August. It opens as early as Memorial Day, but it can be hazardous for motorcycles through June. At that elevation the snow berms are still melting over the roadways and can freeze overnight. But they say to always bring gear for rain. At 10k+ feet you can get weather any time of the year.

The downside is that hotels in that are pretty expensive that time of year. And they sell out fast. Red Lodge is on the East side of the highway, and Cooke City to the West . I just looked at Expedia for July 26th, 2018. Only 3 hotels aren't booked and they are $110-$140 per night.

Another option would be to meet up in Billings. 60 mile ride from Red Lodge, but much easier to find lodging at a better price.

It would be hard to find a better location than Cody. There are activities there in addition to biking like rodeos, fantastic museums, Yellowstone, etc. Since lodging is expensive at most recreational locations, it may work to just consider r.v. camping. The in-town location of Ponderosa Campground, for example, is $50. per night or less. Many folks might want to stay for up to two weeks. I would be up to at least one week if I were r.v. camping.

Here's a link to the area on Motorcycleroads.com:

http://www.motorcycleroads.com/Routes/Montana_102.html

You can see the number of scenic m.c. roads in the area that have been written up.
