Which grade of gas do you use?? 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Howdy guys, I've been using reg grade gas in my bike I was telling a friend about my bike pops when you start to throttle up at a red light sometimes it will have a small backfire evening when hot. When it's cold after cranking in cool weather it will do it. My friend ask me what gas grade I use. Just wondering if that lower grade could cause this or maybe i have other problems.

Just recently I open it up from a dead stop and got on it hard. In the past it was fine but nowadays it starts fine but before I get into high rpms it starts to sputter. Is this because of wrong gas has fouled my plugs or do I have other problems??

Thanks for your help!! Gator

Regular unleaded is fine for the R*. Check your plugs and see what they look like.

I think the lower grade is what is recommended for our bikes and what most are running. It should do well unless you have motorwork that would requires a higher octane.

The book say's 87 oct. but the parts counter person at the Yamaha dealer say's to run prem., I told him that mine runs better on reg. and he just shrug his shoulders and walked away...check your plugs and maybe the air filter?
not changing the oil causes svs and it starts back firing.
Our Roadies don't like to get a quick blip on the throttle at lights when they are all warmed up,with the longer stroke, they are ready for the open road, and not the high revving rice rocket motors.

My bike does run better on 89, but then again, I don't believe my bike is running properly.

There was a good octane discussion on the board a while ago, but I think it was around mileage, which octane has no affect on. The octane rating is how much compression the fuel can handle before it ignites. There's a pretty clear article on HowStuffWorks.com Lower octane equals lower compression. Low octane fuels in high compression engines result in pinging or knocking because the fuel is pre-igniting from compression (like a diesel) before the spark plug fires. High octane fuel in a lower compression engine has no affect (other than price). Unless our bikes modified for higher compression we don't run high enough compression to need more than 87.

Your cold start and run could be a carb issue. I see an aftermarket air cleaner and pipes in your profile pic. Do you know if the carb was rejetted after those were installed? I'm thinking you might be running lean (too much air relative to fuel). I'm also thinking the sputter at high revs could be the rev limiter. The rev limiter interrupts the ignition and stops the revs from going to high and blowing your motor. When you hit the limiter feels the bike is sputtering or not getting fuel. I think the stock limit is 4200 rpm?
