AIS question... 5 Years, 8 Months ago
So, the two block off plates that come in the kit, appear to be steel, has anyone made them out of aluminum? I have access to 2024-T3 aluminum in all kinds of thicknesses, I was thinking of fabricating my own using .050" thick aluminum, any thought's?

I would make them out of at least .080 if using 2024T3, just because there is less chance of warpage. The head is most likely A356 alloy, which has similar expansion characteristics, but I'd go heavy and make sure. I made my own plugs for my '03 out of 2024T3511 round bar stock, and put them in with a .002" shrink fit with liquid nitrogen. I highly reccomend it, but if someone else is not buying the 90 liter vessel of liquid nitrogen, it's cheaper to go with dry ice and denatured alcohol for the chill. Obviously you are dealing with a 1700, since you refer to plates. Try to find some drilled head cap screws and safety wire the caps on, for a great question generator!

Making your own parts makes the whole thing more of your own! Got garage parts on all my bikes. That's CUSTOM! Cussed 'em when I saw how much they cost from (insert dealer here), and Cussed 'em again while I was making 'em!

You are speaking my lingo, I work in aviation, and have access to the dry ice, cap screws, and even safety wire, yes it's a 1700.

Worked Corporate jets for 16 years straight. Needed a scenery change, and a 20K a year boost in pay!
