Will a starter from a warrior fit a 1700 Road Star? If so that would seem logical to go that route. My starter on my 1700 is dragging a bit. Would like to upgrade it.

Warrior will fit, you can find the articles.

But clean yours out (and make sure you have clean connections at ALL points, with the option of 4 gauge cables from Davej) before buying a new one.

Well I took it apart and cleaned it out twice three times including last year this month I guess the only thing I didn't do is check the but windings with a voltmeter and I didn't clean in between the copper On the Armature I'm going to pull it today and put the old voltmeter on it I guess I assumed my compressor would blow the dust out between the cracks oh and I guess they had different starters for different years later starters are seem to be stronger or higher output and I just want to make sure they would be backwards compatible I'm pretty sure they didn't really change the engine blocks but they may have a chart changed the starter drive gear on the fuel injected models years

Okay I found some crystallized carbon in between the copper on the commentator are used a very small screwdriver to gently scratch it out I checked everything with a vom seems okay could just a little bit of carbon carbon cause that much trouble I guess could if it arcs two together? Try again this time I'm gonna carry my other bikes starter and tools with me so I don't get stranded if she won't crank kind of cool reminds me of the old days when bikes broke down

cleaned the carbon, put it back ,just click, wont turn even hot cabled.\

took it apart again, same as last year, the spring where hot bolt cones thru side of starter attached to hot brushes is cracked on one of the 90 degree bends??? WTF why, OEM yammie replacement part, I guess brushes are arc soldered on, cant just replace that piece.2nd time in one year, the thru bolt rusting showing signs of water intrusion too. guess its off to new brushes again, this time im replacing the battery cables .

wow, both 90 degree turns are cracked and very fragile, is that from heat running thru the circuit? it is non magnetic, so i guess its brass alloy ????
aftermraket ones are steel and cheaper, hmmmmmmmmmmm

Thanks exactly what I found when I opened my 2003 starter that didn't work often but did work sometimes. I tried to solder and weld but neither would stick. I have not found new brushes for the stock starter yet so if you find a link or part number I would grab a set and keep as a spare, I installed motorgirl s starter. Working flawless since.

im working an aftermarket supplier for info re brush dimensions on his 28.99$ model, i got one last year ebay caltric brand POS and the 6 mm brush was only 5 mm wide, needless to say i didnt install it as it is a POS, i went with OEM which is also a POS, with obvious cracking issues. not sure why. could it be that noise or recoil when we shut off these beastly motors? what did you try to solder/ sislver solder with, i couldnt even get the brush wires off with maps torch. how are they attached.
