Easy, tedious but important job. Anyone up for it? 2 Weeks, 5 Days ago
Our listing of Tech Writeups is at:
http://roadstarclinic.com/component/option,com_samsitemap/Itemid,179/

Anyone willing to take the time to copy everything before the site changeover?

I think someone said they had already copied everything ... is this true?
I'd like to know we have it off-site before the end of the month.

Anything not saved by that time will be difficult to recover with some things not possible to recover.
I'd hate for all the tech articles here to fall into that black hole ......

I have copied the engine rebuild PDFs already. I could continue copying the articles from the beginning, just not sure if I can get it completed be the end of the month.
Maybe if someone would share the task?

I can take on some or all of that. When I was testing a WordPress forum I recreated one of the tech articles. It’s just a copy and paste job. The whole library shouldn’t take more than a few of hours. Images will take the longest. They’re hosted on the current RSC server. So you have to download them, then upload into the new article.

Sounds good guys.
Maybe to save bandwidth convert the pictures to black & white (grayscale) before putting them into a PDF.
Maybe only save color where it really matters, like electrical.

This is a good idea... So are we to save the PDFs to our local computers and then you plan to collect them later and put them on the new server?

Perhaps it would be a good idea to divide the task up, so people aren't duplicating efforts, and to insure it all gets done.

If someone one finishes their section and they want to continue they can choose another or help others with theirs.

I'm thinking we can break it down by section. i.e.,

    - Body/Sheetmetal
    - Brakes
    - Carb/Manifold/AirKit
    - Chassis/Frame
    - etc.

We keep a running list of which sections and pages have been saved and that way other people can move on to the next and so one. [Maybe someone can post that as a spreadsheet on Google; like we did the member contact info?]

For those who've already saved some, can you list the following:

Section/ Subsection/ Last article in that subsection you've saved.

Example:

Engine/ Valves/ All
Engine/ Engine Tear Down and Reassembly Series/ Up to - "Assembling the Cam Area"

And so on...

You can even just say, I plan to get *all* articles in the Engine section... So someone can choose another.

Also, while we're at it, it would be very helpful to add these pages to Archive.org; which is a free service where they will automatically save and host it indefinitely...

Maybe this might even be easier than downloading and saving PDFs and then adding them to the site later. We can just link to the respective articles on the archive.org page from our new site... [I'll leave that up to you to decide Bubba.] Either way I think it'd be a good idea to save both.

They have a browser plug-in that provides a button at the top of any page you're on so you can just click it to automatically archive that page.

To get the plug in, go to Tools/Addons in the menu bar of your web browser. Then from the Addons page choose "Plugins" and search for the "Wayback Machine" plugin by Internet Archive and install it on your browser.

If you don't want to install the plug in, you can copy the respective URL of the page you want to save, then go to: https://archive.org/web/ scroll down and chose the section on the right that says, "Save Page Now". Paste the link in the box provided and click the "Save Page" button. It may take a couple mins to save the page but you can let it run in the background.

*IMPORTANT* Often only the page you've provided will be saved, NOT the links in that page. EACH link on a page may also have to be saved.

When your archive.org finishes uploading a page, you can just click on a link and it will give a message that says something like, "This page is available on the web! Help make the Wayback Machine more complete!" Then click "Save this url in the Wayback Machine"

This way we have local copies and one on archive.org that will be accessible indefinitely for everyone.

Personally, I'm a little tied up with a family health matter right now, but would be glad to assist when I'm able. I should know more in the next couple days. I'll keep checking in when I can.

How about posting them to a Google share drive when they are completed? Also a spreadsheet that people could claim an article as theirs and then sign it off when uploaded to the share drive.

UPDATE: The Tech Section backup on Archive.org may *already* be done...??

When I tried using Archive.org the other day on the forum section, it didn't archive embedded links. However, I tried it it on the tech section just now and it appears as if it did pick up *all* the linked sections. Photos and all... [which means our tech section is already archived] Possibly because they're normal web pages??

Anyway, maybe some of you can test it out and see if it works for you as well. Just go to the link below and browse the tech section like it's our normal site. Be sure to click down through the links all the way to the articles themselves.

Please report back with your findings.

Thanks!

I tried 3 or 4 from different sections and they seemed to be ok.

That's awesome!
If anyone wants to blow some time, maybe just go through the list on WebArchive.com.

If someone is going to do this, make a note of the date at the top of the page.
Most of the site was last archived in mid-2017.
