Oil Pump gear 4 Years, 9 Months ago
I bought a yamaha high rpm oil pump gear. This information was included in the install directions and I thought I'd post just in case it helps someone determine if they already have the gear installed on their bike without having to tear the clutch assy out..

"Later production models have an upgraded oil pump gear assembly. This high rpm oil pump gear assembly is NOT required if your motorcycle's Primary ID is as follows:

49-State Models
XV1600AP: VP02E-018240 and after
XV1600ASP: VP02E-018140 and after
XV1600ATP: VP07E-007993 and after

California Models
XV1600APC: VP02Y-002007 and after
XV1600ASPC: VP02Y-002075 and after
XV1600ATPC: VP07Y-000853 and after"

That is good information

Looks like Yamaha built a couple thousand with the new style oil pump gear before mine went down the assembly line

So would a dealer be able to tell me if my oil pump gear was replaced?
I know the trans work was done but didn't ask about the oil pump gear.
My is vin ends with -007328 does this mean I have the older oil pump gear?

Only if they have records of it being done. Ask and see.
From what you've provided, unless it's a Cali model, yes.

Re:Oil Pump gear 2 Years ago
Keep in mind that unless the owner of the bike ask for the pump gear to be changed during the recall it won't be. I haven't heard of even 1 person that was warned of the weak gear from the dealership at recall time. If the owner isn't a member here and unaware of the issue he has no reason to ask for it to be changed and I don't believe that many dealership mechanics are familiar enough with a R* to know about this issue. JMO and my advice is anyone with a 1600 that isn't 100% positive they have the new style gear needs to check or have it checked. Regardless of the VIN number. Again JMO.

Re:Oil Pump gear 2 Years ago
Dave is correct... if you have an early R* with the OLD oil pump drive gear, the dealer is almost certainly not going to inform you of the opportunity, during tear down and rebuild for the trans recall matter, to replace that drive gear with the new, updated model.

I have 2 '01 R*s. Both underwent the recall, after I took possession of them. In the first, back in '07, I was unaware of the oil pump drive issue, and did not ask... it's still in there. With the second, bought in '10, I inquired, they sold me the new one, and I had them put it in upon rebuild.

My buddy has an '02, and his drive gear shaft broke, and he kept riding... it is only due to the awesomeness of the synthetic oils we run, that upon tear-down for repair and replacement of the entire oil pump, with new drive gear... they found NO internal damage!!!

We run the Amsoil 10w-40, and we credit that for saving his engine, while he ran with NO oil pressure.
