Ignition Switch....Looking for Options 1 Year, 4 Months ago
So, 1999 Roadie...Ignition Switch is getting flaky, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, can turn it, no electrical connection. I have tried a number of my keys, including the original and all have the same issue, sometimes work, sometimes don't. I am looking for advice or maybe options I haven't considered...

As far as I can tell here are what I'm looking at...

1. Get a used ignition switch and replace it.
2. Get a new ignition switch and replace it.
3. Is repairing it even an option?
4. If I can relocate the seat release...Does anyone know whether other ignition switches (Harley, Generic?) would fit into the existing hole in the bracket and trim?
5. Not adverse to something novel (keyless), but don't want a major cosmetic rebuild to replace the existing layout.

Thanks for all the shared wisdom....

I can supply you a ignition, cap and key if you like. If you change the ignition to something else the seat release is nothing more than a kind of throttle like cable.

My key switch was getting a little funky as well. Sprayed some lithium grease in it and worked the key in my garage for a while and it helped. I've since went to a Digital Guard Dog keyless ignition system. I'm very pleased with it. Easy to install, works great.

Guys,

thanks for the advice. Smokescreens, I'll email you direct about the parts.

I have another question...Looking at the Yami parts diagrams, the whole "ignition/steering lock assembly is sold as a "single piece". If I moved the seat release, is it possible to pull just the switch out of the circular channel in the lock assy and drop a "generic" ignition switch in, connect the wires, get a new tank cap and "rock on?

THANKS!

You can get a universal style ignition if you want but it will not attatch itself to the fork lock or seat release.

thanks SmokeScreen...I will look at gas caps to see if there is something that catches my eye, if not, I'll email you about the factory parts you have. I'm not worried about the fork lock and I'll re-route the seat release.

Baron makes a replacement, non-locking gas cap called the Profiler. I just bought and installed 3. The materials and workmanship cannot be faulted. It's good quality stuff. Hence, no key anymore!

I did so because I was recently about empty, and at a gas pump when... my key no longer unlocked the cap! I had to gently dismantle the entire thing with a Saws-All, mechanic's magnet on a stick, and a mechanic's claw to reach and remove the non-ferrous parts from out of the tank.

Who here needs a locking gas cap anyway? As I thought about it, I realized I sure didn't around these parts, and replaced them all so that THAT would never happen to me again!

As for a switch... I don't intend to use the one in my '04 any longer, but I also don't intend to remove it until winter has set in, too. Sorry.

The only reason I have left the key switch in place on mine is I like having the steering lock for when I travel without having to use a separate pad lock that can be easily cut off.

Also, by leaving the key switch in place, the way I wired the DGD unit, if it was to fail for any reason, I can have my tank off in a few minutes, plug the switch back into the factory wiring and have a functional key switch to get on down the road.
