Re:Carb set up help 1 Year, 4 Months ago
I dont spend much time above 80 but its nice to know i can pass on the freeway. Im just trying to find the best main and then ill work my way down. I think ill try the on the 4th grooze next since its the easiest thing to do. Im getting tired of pulling that tank, ive been doing it all summer. This airfilter really seems to be passing a lot of air. When it was stock it only got 41 so if i can get back there cobsistently id be really happy. Ive never seen 45 even when im not hot rodding. Comming from a 4 cylinder bike im more used to winding an engine up so i prob shift at higher rpm than most rs riders.

Put the 180 back in and change the needle setting to the 4th groove maybe even 4th groove with 2 washers under the clip. Use the 40 pilot jet 2 1/2 turns out on the PMS. Right now you are artificially covering up the real problem with the larger main. You can eventually get there like that but then you will be way rich at WOT in the main circuit and that is also no good. That is 1 of the problems with the way the jet kit manufacturers want you to jet. They don't want to jet each circuit with the proper jet that controls the circuit. For some reason they all only want to richen all the circuits with the changing of the main jet. When your AFR goes lean due to modifications it goes lean across the board in all circuits. Why would you try to fix the lean conditions by only richening the main circuit? It never made any sense to me. As I said you can get it to some sort of tune that way but it won't be an optimum tune, so why do it?

DaveJ I completely agree with you and I really appreciate your input. I did have the 180 in it when I was in sturgis this year with the needle on the 4th groove. Coming back from the devils tower on the freeway I felt it bumping on a lean spot above 80 and had a lag above that at WOT. I didnt have more than the 1 washer at the time so I didnt try 2 under the needle. Thats why I went to the 182.5 when I got back. I am not exactly following Kury, they wanted me to change out a air compensation jet and I didnt. They also directed me to drop the needle to the 2nd groove with the 182.5 so of course I put it in the 3rd just to see what happens. It was better running than with the 180 in it. I also had the 37.5 pilot in at the time and that was to lean and affected the driveability off idle. So I changed it out for the #40 again and this is much better. My next step will be try the needle in the 4th grove.

When I had a speedstar needle in my stock carb I even ran it in the 5th groove for a while and it run pretty good. Changing the needle setting changes more than what most people realize. It changes things thru all the circuits except idle.
