hello new here,want to get a little more sound an performance by drilling my exhaust,i have a xv500 1983,can that be done i have 1 exhaust on each side,would appreciate information

I think the bike has a cone muffler correct...? their should be a wide space around the 1 inch baffle exhaust hole "end cap" correct? drill 4 ea. equally spaced 1/4 inch drill bit size holes around the exhaust end cap baffle hole, center drill bit holes between the exhaust hole and chrome muffler pipe, make the drilled holes look uniform and centered on the exhaust end caps, ride it....do not go bigger it will have a fluttering sound...on deceleration

I just did the Stage 1 on my 07 R* and it made an amazing difference! I kept the pipes on the bike and used a tellescoping magnet to get the metal shards out. Also, I would suggest cutting the cone almost in half (with your Dremel tool), this will make it easier to bend down and get out of the end of the pipe.

I did my exhaust this morning using the stage one modification. Took me about 2 hours to do. Those cones were a booger to get out. I also cut the inner pipe even with the baffle's edge in order to give it a cleaner look. The inside of my pipes look like an 8-shot revolver cylinder and sound like a beast. One question, do i have to paint the inside of the pipes with engine paint or will the carbon from the exhaust blacken everything up in time? The holes are shiny from the drilling and I also ground the small cone welding tacks on the bottoms of the inside of the pipes. Thanks to all those who offer advise, it gives you confidence to do these mods yourself.

I have an '08 Roadie. I want to do the stage 1 but have a question. The rear of my muffler is not conical. The rear inside is more like a flat flange. Can this be removed, or do I drill through this and the first baffle plate to achieve the stage 1? This looks like the "flat flange" is there instead of a cone at the rear. Thanks for any help

Hey Bandit, Welcome to the Clinic! Do a search in the toolbar in the upper right of the window on the blue bar and look specifically for -08 and up drill. You have an intergral catalytic converter, and it changes things up a little. We don't have a solid write-up on those yet.

I am also looking for the info on the late model exhaust mod mine is 2011 not sure what you mean by the toobar in the upper right of the blue bar sorry to be dense hunted didn't find. Also, jd750 I am still curious what seat you have on your bike looks very comfortable??

At the top of this page is an internal tool bar above your name that has tabs for home, tech articles, forum, galleries, etc. There is a thin border that is highlighted with the tab you are in, in this case, it will be the Forum tab. Immediately below that is a blue task bar that has "Road Star Forum, Forum, My Forum Settings, etc. That is the task bar I am referring to. On the far right end of that task bar is a white window that is labeled inside the box as "Search Forum" with a "go" button to the right of it. That's how you search within the forum here.
My seat is the Corbin Dual Touring Seat made for Yamaha. Here's one on E-Bay. This seat is not everyone's cup of tea. It is a saddle, more than a seat. It comes closer to a horse saddle than a padded leather chair. I happen to love it, lots have tried it and hated it. Best to sit on one, or better yet meet up with someone thaqt has one, and bolt it on your bike and go ride together and see what you think. They can be had REAL cheap to what they cost initially, but you don't want to buy a seat just for the look unless you intend to look at it more than ride it. I'm satisfied with it, and so are a few others, but the ED seats are getting all the rave reviews as of late.
