Cheaper is better... I mean I know the rev limiter is lower but that can be fixed electronically for what $250?

You can either switch to a dyna 3000, or pick up the ignitor out of a 04 -07 1700, and it'll plug and play and give you another 500rpms, for a peak of 4750. You don't want to be going over 5k without doing some inside work, with valve springs from what I've read on here.

I'm very happy with the 1700 box in my 1600.

Not anything really useable. The torque peak is around 3800 RPM or so, so the torque is falling, and the HP gain between 4750 and 5000 ain't much at all. Just room to make some more noise unless you do internal work.

Here's a 1600 Dyno chart. You can see the HP has flattened out by 3500 RPM. The peak internal efficiency has passed and is in decline in the lower trace, and the upper one it is sustained, but still flat.

This is a 1700 Dyno chart from the Star web site showing the massive difference in stage IV modifications, which are big time internals and ignition module change. What this reflects that is curious to me is the early peak and steady decline in the stock torque curve, but as you can see, the HP peaks and goes flat, much like the 1600's trace.

Not that much difference but I feel the revving thing I would have to change. If I find a steal on a16 I'll go for it

You can usually pick up a 1700 ignitor, for around $140(Pinwalls but it now price, IIRC). The difference in price between a good to great condition 1600, versus a comparable 1700, may be as much as 2k.

Other then the tranny recall, which is a freebie, some of the early 1600's have experienced failures of the oil pump drive gear/shaft. Here is a link to the vin series.

This is about a $50 dollar part, if you do it yourself, and it sits behind the clutch assembly.

Make sure you don't get too new as you don't want all the extra wiring etc. from the fuel injection.
The 1600's works great with the HSR42 carb which are cheap.
