Hard telling what the mechanic that jetted it actually did to it. I'd like to figure out the manufacturer of the pipes to have a starting point of what it should have been set to. Have no info on what the pipes are to relay the "specs" unfortunately. Took some tinkering to get it running following a solid year of sitting from previous owner. Carb leaked fuel sitting there at idle and thought to check for a bad o-ring on the needle seat (was able to remove the bowl on chassis by the way) which was the problem there. No more leaks and resolved the rich condition it had at idle. Have not changed any of the carb settings either. Runs great, lots of power, doesn't hesitate or have any issues running. Ambient temps I've been riding in lately are around 30F to 45F since I got it on the road. Only getting about 23-25 mpg out of it. Tried to go easy on the throttle on my typical work commute that has multiple stops and speed changes on the 19 mile trip. Yet to do a straight shot over the road ride for a consistent burn rate comparison. My 1100 V-star gets 43mpg at best usually. On the same commute when I'm not trying to go easy on throttle, can still get about 38mpg. If this thing isn't going to get any better than 25mpg, hate to say it but the fun factor won't be enough to justify keeping it around :/ Was wanting to upsize to a Road Star from my 1100. Love the bike, may have to find a more civilized one than this... Roadhouse Doolies, Thunder Manufacturing Air Clearer, 72.5 main,40 pilot, 2 1/2 turns on the PMS. 40...41 MPGs at 70 MPH. I go for smiles per gallon!!! For whatever it's worth, I'm pretty consistent with turning reserve somewhere between 160 and 180 (depending on how much smiling I'm doing!) I agree with the habit of becoming very familiar with reaching down with your left hand to flip reserve while on the fly. Don't know if this is common to most, but my bike seems very responsive. Keep in mind, the jet sizes Dave mentioned in his post, are for Mikuni jets. At least here on Southern CA freeways. And they'll do it in the number one or number two lanes and could give a rip if everyone is forced to go around them on the right side!
