That's what I'm hoping for, the mileage I'm seeing is the "FUN" type

FI fuel pumps are located inside the fuel tank because they run pretty warm and the fuel keeps them cooler and makes them last longer. I get 43mpg regularly with my 03 (with windshield) and 45 without the bug sail installed.

I would agree.. Hard telling what the mechanic that jetted it actually did to it. I'd like to figure out the manufacturer of the pipes to have a starting point of what it should have been set to. May have to completely remove them from the bike as I've yet to find markings on exposed chrome parts...

Curious if those reporting 43 mpg are factory pipes and carb jetting? Anyone getting that with aftermarket pipes and jetting? I bought a 2005 Road Star with 25k miles recently that was piped and jetted before the previous owner ever had it. Have no info on what the pipes are to relay the "specs" unfortunately.

Took some tinkering to get it running following a solid year of sitting from previous owner. Carb leaked fuel sitting there at idle and thought to check for a bad o-ring on the needle seat (was able to remove the bowl on chassis by the way) which was the problem there. No more leaks and resolved the rich condition it had at idle. Have not changed any of the carb settings either. Runs great, lots of power, doesn't hesitate or have any issues running.

Ambient temps I've been riding in lately are around 30F to 45F since I got it on the road. Only getting about 23-25 mpg out of it. Tried to go easy on the throttle on my typical work commute that has multiple stops and speed changes on the 19 mile trip. Yet to do a straight shot over the road ride for a consistent burn rate comparison. My 1100 V-star gets 43mpg at best usually. On the same commute when I'm not trying to go easy on throttle, can still get about 38mpg. If this thing isn't going to get any better than 25mpg, hate to say it but the fun factor won't be enough to justify keeping it around :/ Was wanting to upsize to a Road Star from my 1100. Love the bike, may have to find a more civilized one than this...

Roadhouse Doolies, Thunder Manufacturing Air Clearer, 72.5 main,40 pilot, 2 1/2 turns on the PMS.
40...41 MPGs at 70 MPH. The 40 pilot is what really made the difference.

as long as I had fun the mileage was perfect
I'm with roadiemort on this one. I go for smiles per gallon!!!

For whatever it's worth, I'm pretty consistent with turning reserve somewhere between 160 and 180 (depending on how much smiling I'm doing!)

I agree with the habit of becoming very familiar with reaching down with your left hand to flip reserve while on the fly. Don't know if this is common to most, but my bike seems very responsive. From the moment I detect a slight hesitation I can reach down, turn, and we're clear in about 4 seconds.

Keep in mind, the jet sizes Dave mentioned in his post, are for Mikuni jets.

The clip position on his needle, is 4 down from the top with the fat plastic spacer and a single silver washer, under the clip.

I figure it is almost pointless to track mpg..On a carbed bike, every time you touch the throttle the little accelerator pump squirts a shot of gas..every time! and I can't keep my hands off of it.... And who wants to ride a long straight flat road with a throttle loc set to 60 mph to get the optimum mpg....not me!......):

When gas where you live & ride is over 3 dollars a gallon and you commute 33 miles to work 70% of the year.. there's a point to it. My hybrid vehicle is my 43 mpg roadstar!

Anyone in a Prius! At least here on Southern CA freeways. And they'll do it in the number one or number two lanes and could give a rip if everyone is forced to go around them on the right side!
Sorry
