Not sure this is the right placefor this question 3 Months, 1 Week ago
So Im posting this here because its engine related but its not about jetting. So sorry if I'm wrong.
My motor seems to be going into a timing cycle that lasts forever that is perfect sequence. It will do a short run in the sounds of a single pin and then act like a dual. So I get a blukitabluk bluk blukitablukita bluk blukita, then a sudden instant switch to bluka bluka bluka bluka bluka bluka for ever. Like it cant get back out of the timing of perfect circle. I uploaded a video to youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOTv-9292pg. I wanted a single pin because I like that unbalanced sound and the throatiness. But once in this cycle it stays there indefinitely. It may never go back to the right sound.

The three questions. Is this normal? Is its to do with the motor/carb? is it to do with pipe backpressure?

I have noticed in videos that the roadies with hypers and V&H pipes have that sound. And a bunch of the others have the times sound.

Any ideas for me to try?

Well sir, we tune to RPM at HOT idle. Engine HOT (30 minutes at highway speed) idle should be between 850 and 950 rpm. It will NOT make the potato noise because it is a better motor. When it is in the correct idle range, there is no lope to it. On a cold start up with the enrichener open, it should run high and even idle for 20-40 seconds. Then it will get uneven sounding, and you push the enrichener in half way to smooth it back out. At this point you can take off down the road and push it the rest of the way in after a mile or two. It’ll always be a BIG single pin crank, regardless of if it’s humming at the right speed or dialed down to sound like a POS that will barely run. Low idle produces a number of issues that are not present at the correct idle range. It’s how manufacturers determine where their minimum sustained speed should be.

Is the bike well warmed up in the vid, maybe after 10 or 15 miles of riding, or did you just start it?
Is the hot idle set to about 900 rpms?

Yeah what he said

Slow typer, and I got side tracked between the video and my post.

With those short pipes and no back pressure, no wonder you are having running and possible jetting issues. You need some back pressure or some type of muffler. Would sticky valve syndrome be an issue with this year of bike?

Thanks guys.

It was idling for a solid 10 minutes and maybe one mile around the block. But this is the same after a 100 mile ride. It stays at the perfect circle most of the time. The sound at the beginning (what I like)is very rare to get. Temps and time doesn't seem to effect it. I have no way other than ear to set idle. And it doesn't matter the idle speed. Ill get infrequent moments of it in a nice sound with the stutter, but the vast majority of the time it stays in that second perfect looping sound. I've been on Harley's and I haven't rode one I like compared to my roadie but the sound is terrible. This bike sounds exactly like my old suzuki 800 just deeper. And I know that's not right.

That's what I was wondering. I do have the factory tips but they are bored out. I don't think its getting any backpressure. Does the vance and hines have baffles in them?

Girlfriend those pipes are different one longer than the other that's why it sounds funky you're silly spunky monkey proper pipes on that damn thing for you blow it up not to make mention make everybody deaf can you go to have an exhaust on a bike like that you better damn sure make sure that it's jetted properly and unless you want to ride alone I would advise against most of the Vance & Hines cuz they're pretty loud and just might get you a ticket depending where you live 2 into 1 Pro pipe is a better choice but it doesn't have that classic look

Less than 33 inches of pipe length will pretty much guarantee random reversion events for you. That is probably the 2nd worst performing exhaust arrangement you can run on this motor. The worst being BOTH pipes shorter than 33 inches in length. $0.02.
