What primary chain are you talking about? I thought it was gear driven?
Transfer case. I’ve seen photos, and posts, of the neglected chain, bearings and cross shaft, where the chain was so worn it was slapping the case, and beating the case cover casting silly.

Unless you’re poking along on flat ground, they just don’t like to be run below 2000 rpms. Especially, if you decide to roll on the throttle.
3rd gear doesn’t hit the limiter, until you’re around 85mph.
I notice on my springer, the passing lights vibrate like crazy, until the motor is over 2100rpms.
My mileage starts to suffer when I get in the 3000rpm range. It’s really happier there, but it comes at a price.

I just wanted to say that springer front end looks really cool. I generally hate the way that springers ride but that does look great. I haven't ridden a springer in over 15 years so the technology might have gotten better also.

Those springers with the shock absorber assist work much better than one without. Stops a lot of the pogo-ing.

Neglect. I E maintenance. There’s oil in there that should be changed. It’s in the manual for scheduled times.
Folks that failed to do so we’re rewarded with doomed cross shaft bearings and worn hyvo chains and cogs.

This one handles great, IMHO. It's from a 96 or 97 HD FXSTSBB. I actually prefer it, to the stock front end on my other Roadie, even after the Race Tech and emulators were installed. Granted, when you spend a butt load of money on something, you may be a bit biased. Quality front ends, don't come cheap. This was NOS out of somewhere in Pennsylvania, IIRC.
Like PB said, the damper makes a world of difference, as does the general heft of the HD Springer front end. It is built for a bike that weighs as much as the Roadstars do. There is zero pogoing with this. Riding the same roads at the same speeds(10 year old asphalt with dips and tire grooves and rolls from heavy truck traffic), this one feels more stable then the improved stock one. It's less influenced by the road surface, IMHO.
