I think it's a 1600 with a 1700 rear setup. Could have been rear ended at one time?

Never seen that color in stock form before. It's still a nice bike. And a good price too for up here in Canada, but would need to be fully looked over to see if it wasn't damaged as DocShadow mentioned.

Did the 1600s ever come with a blacked out motor?

With the chrome tins, black motor, and brown tinted tank badges it looks like a Midnight edition that's been painted. I say he's got the year wrong in the add.

I sent him an email asking him these questions, waiting for a response. The year would be on the ownership and he typed it wrong twice in the ad, Stolen bike maybe?

I see early midnight versions here in eastern Canada with blacked out engine and chrome front end from time to time. Like these ones. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-moto-touring/bathurst/2001-yamaha-road-star-midnight-star/1157262744?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-moto-chopper/fredericton/yamaha-roadstar/1154684564?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

after looking at the pics, the tank badge is the same as later models. Maybe he just changed the rear fender to a led light.

There were some midnight 1600s.
The rear light & fender could just be an upgrade.
I've seen several people here asking about doing that exact swap.
None of them were wrecked, just wanted the LED teardrop.

That $3500 Canadian is only about $2700 USD & just across the border for some of you guys!

The front brakes are from 1600's, that's why I suspect it's a 1600 which could have been in a minor accident or like me he replaced with the 1700 LED light setup. Definitely repainted.
