How to find and buy extended cable kit . . . 11 Months ago
Hey everyone,

I'm new around here and to Road Stars. I put apes on an HD I used to have and loved it. Now I'd like to put a set of 14's with 2 in. risers on my RS. The trouble I'm having is finding a cable kit, and finding the length I need. Mine has stock cables now with a 4in. drag bar (I think). Has anyone added 14 in. apes with an extended cable kit? If so, how much longer than stock. Or if you've added 16s, what cables did you get. Also, what's the best cable kit for RS? Thanks in advance.

Barnett for cables. You probably want to consider 12" to 14" plus inches for your length. Your bars are aprx. 10" taller and your risers are aprx. 2 inches taller. If you want them snug go 12" a little loose and some room to play with them go 14". Just my opinion, others may have different ones.

Welcome. Look up Cables on here. Pacific Coast Star does kits. The wiring you have to extend yourself. I am currently looking to get Blue Stainless Brake, Throttle and Clutch cables. I think APEX makes them, but I need to measure first. I have buck horns that I want to put on. So if you find someone that does R* bolt on cables, maybe +2 in blue let me know. Thanks.

Thanks Rod,

I'll check out the Barnett cables now. Do you know if they have wire extensions included? I really would like to skip out on the soldering if possible.

Thanks MaiRoadie. I'll check those out and if I come across any blue ones I'll let you know. I really was hoping to do the wiring the easy way. I used a Burley set on my HD and it had wire extensions, which were nice. I'd like to find something like that for the R*

Everything I read on here states that you have to solder.

I just did mine. Got the cables from MetricMagic. Got the wires from Amazon.

Worked great. But was way more work than I expected. Anyway, turned out fantastic.

Thanks, it looks good!

I think I was putting the cart before the horse . . . a little over confident. I've done bars before, but I don't even have a service manual for this bike yet. I know that will save a lot of headaches. I guess my main trouble is finding all the stuff that I can verify WILL work together before I order parts. Just going to have to be patient I guess. I'll definitely check MetricMagic. Did you order a wiring kit specifically for Roadstars from Amazon?

Sorry I wasn't clear. I bought a large roll of black wire from Amazon, and spliced and soldered the wires myself. I could find a kit.

Metric Magic will know what to send you if you tell him the size bars and the year of your bike.

Ordering the parts was easy. The work was not easy. But, I learned a lot in the process.

I thought I'd get it done in a weekend, but it took my about a month. I didn't work on it constantly, just a few hours each Saturday. Then, sometimes, I'd stop because I needed a tool or something. It was a wild adventure for me. Lol.

Also if you are going to do any soldering, invest is some heat shrink tubing. It makes the job look a lot neater.
