It's not so much that they need 20w50, it's that the only Mobil 1 specific to *V-twins* happens to be 20w50. I'll save you the long dissertation, but it's all about the ZDDP. Look it up and you'll find LOTS of info here on it.

In short, the safe bet, unless you know for certain there's enough ZDDP, is to avoid oil that's *not* specifically for **V-twins**.

There are others that will work, but they tend to be harder to come by and just as, if not more, expensive.

My personal preference is for the Mobile 1 V-twin. Then again, I live in California where the cold temps are not as prevalent as other parts of the country. So the 20w50 works fine for me. That said there are others here who would know better than I would the proper oil for your needs. I'm sure they'll chime in.

Here you go.

Easy to read the charts and decide for yourself. Discusses both the 40 weight and 50 weight groups in detail.

OK thanks Doc, seems like alot of people swear by the Mobil 1 on here. Anyone use anything besides Mobil 1 VTwin?

Seems the 10w40 has a wider temp range.....how come Roadstars need 20 weight oil, or is the 10w ok to run? just wondering. Thanks
