Hey guys, is 185 main jet stock? Why would it have a barons adjustable needle with the stock jet. I would think 170 or 175 would be better.

HIs is a 185DJ. Its about the same size as the 172.5 and 175 Mikuni mains as far as fuel flow. It should work fine with what he has. If you look on the Tech Articles page, you'll see a chart that shows comparisons between Miluni and DJ mains.

Best thing you can ever do is don't do a lick of carb tuning and throw out the stock carb and throw on a HSR42.

so far as handling it can be lots of stuff. All I know is our bike with that monoshock does not plant and feel like a twin shock bike to me. does not feel near as solid.

Which HSR42 ? That is one of the FIRST questions that I listed on this post . LOL. I have been looking for one but there are many to choose from. Do you have a part number ? If I am going to change carbs, I would like to do it when I attempt the SVS cure again. Any extra parts required to make the change ?? I have found a few used ones for sale on Ebay just not sure what to buy.

I was told to run 87 that is what I have been running. I also use a bottle of yamalube / ringfree w/ every tank full. I have also tried seafoam.

The only real fix for the SVS that the early 1700's suffered from is to ream the valve guides out to the proper diameter (6 mm's I think it is). The valve springs don't need to be changed. The valves are sticking because they're too tight and not getting the proper lubrication.

I doesn't have anything to do with how much oil was put in the engine or anything like that. Those that fixed it by running various chemicals through the engine and running it hard just finally wore something down until there was enough clearance to stop the sticking. Yamaha just made a mistake when they fitted the guides and there's only one way to properly correct that.

The stock carburetor is the best one for the bike and is good for about 80 hp. SS has an HSR kit but the only problem is that they don't believe eliminating the TPS makes any difference in the performance and that's been proven to be incorrect.

I hope you get it fixed because they are great bikes.

I don't know sh*t about these carbs, but here is one I found on CL this morning. The experts here can weigh in.

Hope this helps.

99% of the Roadstars out there have the stock carb. It does work fine, and I know of one carb guru here that even went back to it after putting a HSR42 on.

The other stock part that works fine on the Roadstars are is the ignition. You have the 1700 with the higher rev limit, why screw around with an after market ignition?
It's been shown the aftermarket coils do nothing. The stock system is all that is needed to provide the spark that is needed.

I think SVS is on the right track, but for kicks swap your coils. Swap front and rear, and see if the fouling follows the coils.

(Worth a try, but still bet SVS... )

This is what I did with mine. Patrick at Patrick racing told me that a stock Roadstar doesn't need an HSR 45 crab so I went with the 42. Bought the complete kit with SS cables and BAK.

They are extremely good at what they do and might be able to give you some good pointers.
Good luck, it really is worth the ride.
