Changing exhaust, tuneing suggestions 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Changing out my exhaust from only running headers to a used set of V&H Longshots without baffles. Needing some help of what might be a good starting point for setting up the carb.

My current set up
03 w/ hypercharger & ported manifold.
Needle 3rd groove from blunt
195 main
35 Pilot
? starter jet (couldn't find a number on this one)
PMS 3/4 of a turn out.

Also my bike wasn't running all that great before pulling the old exhaust. I've read most of the tech articals about carbs and jetting but still don't have a very good grasp and getting them set up. Thanks for the help.

Don't worry about the starter jet.

Was the air jet changed, when the Hypercharger was installed? Does it have the vacuum operated butterflies, or just a glorified air box, with a K&N style air filter?

If the air jet was not changed, I'd do this.....

Put baffles in the V&H's
Swap the 35 pilot for a Mikuni 37.5
Swap the 195 main, for a 167.5 Mikuni main
Clip in the 4th groove from the top(blunt end), with the fat plastic spacer, and silver washer, below the clip.
PMS, 2 3/8 out from lightly seated.

I bought the bike with the hypercharger already installed by the PO so I don't know about the air jet, but it does have the vacuum operated butterflies. Does this change your suggestion at all?

Ok so I got the baffles and set up the carb just like you suggested and the bike is running much better but my gas mileage got even worse than it was before IIonly got about 90 miles out of a tank of gas. Any guess what might be causing this. But it does seem to be running really good and pulling pretty well through the gears only issue that I can really notice is that it won't go any faster than about 100mph. Thanks again for the help.

I still like Long Shots, and the baffles are needed.

Sounds like the advice on the jetting is good so far, as for the 90 gallons on a tank, how much are you putting in on a fill? You're sure it's not an issue with the gauge?

The bikes are not high speed machines, although speedos should be reading "happy".

What happens at 100 mph?

If you are flogging it a lot, 90 miles per tank is about right.

If you are going to get a jet kit get a Barons jet kit, they are sold many places including their site here: https://www.baronscustom.com/indexold.php If you do ten their is an air jet located just under the black cap on top of the carb that should be changed back to the stock size. I recommend getting rid of the hyper charger and getting a K&N filter that many of us run from. Some of the numbers that are good are the RA-066V, RC-1980, RA-076V, and the big one is the RA-077V. There is also a 3" thick Version like the RA-066V but I don't recall the number. The best site to buy from with low prices and fast shipment is here http://www.ajusa.com/K-and-N-Universal-Air-Filters-c1f8.html?brand=1 Just put the filter number in the search box and it will go to it. BTW you have a message.

I usually put in about 4 gallons in when I get gas so not totally empty but it's not half full. As far as the speed it seems to work up steadily climbing until I get to about that 100 or so then it just kinda seems like that's all it gots and cruises at that speed.

Cool thanks is there much difference between the different filters you listed and are these just clamped right on just as they are and good to go or do you need to buy some air kit type deal with them.
