Re:new season: check your nuts! 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago
So I am out in the garage checking my nuts (it is a full house... Don't judge!)

Anyway, I take the cover off and found that I don't have to worry about it ever coming loose... it is welded! Now, while I can appreciate that it is sturdy, I now need to understand what will be required if (when) that comes back to bite in the butt.

Well now, there is something you do not see everyday . . . If the PO got it welded together square where you do not have any ugly vibrations, and they did not cook the seals where you have an oil leak or seep, you are probably good to go for a long, long time. From what I am seeing, rarely do these bikes need to be cracked open there. If / When the time comes, a die or angle head grinder will cut the welds and you just have to change the shaft and pulley like most folks would have in the first place. Several threads on the forum on how to do it.

one example:

Thanks for the info, MBK. It appears to be good, and it feels fine.

You guys think a 2013 model would have this issue? Seems like something they would have resolved. Guess I'll check just in case.

When you remove the case, do you need new gaskets to seal it? Or do you just screw it back together. I've never opened mine up. I want to make sure I do it right.

It's just a cover over the belt and pulley so there is no gasket to worry about.

I figured. Just wanted to check. Seems like every time I go to do something on my bike, it turns into a project rather than a quick check. Lol.

Thanks

Looks like on the 2013, it's welded. There's a nut, but there is weld like material around the threading and the nut. Not a bead, but smooth. Looks like that sucker at never coming off. And, on the nuts that hold the casing, they were lock tighted by Yamaha. It looks like I won't have to worry about it.
