A little FYI 5 Years, 7 Months ago

Had my rear tire off yesterday, while re-installing it, I must have pushed the brake caliper piston in some, I got everything back together, jumped on the bike for a quick ride, first stop sign...no rear brake, of course that kicked off panic mod!!!. use the front brake to get stopped, looked the bike over, everything was where it was supposed to be, pumped the foot brake peddle, two, or three times, and my rear brake returns to normal...so learning from my exp., make sure the rear brakes are working before you hit the road..

Yes. working brakes are a great benefit. After the pistons have been pushed in, you always need to pump the brakes a few times to get them set right.

It would take me a while to find a rear brake problem. The front is were the power and the control is! Fingers have better feel than a foot.
I start my bike while holding my front brake. Unconcious checklist. It's just the way I roll. I can stop very effectively with the front only. Rear only can get you killed in a hurry!

I use both front and rear at the same time, then just before I stop, all front, so I can plant my feet, I want to make sure I get good muscle memory to use both front and rear at the same time.

+1. They say you are supposed to use both front and back. It's good to get used to using them both so if you get in a sticky situation you know how it feels when both are engaged.

I use both most of the time. If I want to coast in and give the throttle hand a stretch, I'll use the rear until the last minute and then switch to plant the feet.
In tight turns, I'll use the rear exclusively. Learned the hard way when the front grips in a turn, the bike goes horizontal.
