gas gauge not working 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
my gas gauge just recently decided to stop working. It used to slowly creep up to full after filling the gas tank, but during a ride this past weekend, it seems like it decided to go on strike. Here's what it's doing now. It stays on 'E' with a full tank just riding around the neighborhood. When I get on the interstate going 'highway speed', the gas gauge needle will start to pick up and move off of 'E'. When I get off the highway back to slower speeds, the needle slowly works back to 'E'. Has anyone experience this, and if so, how did you resolve it? Please let me know. Thanks!

Time to replace the sending unit in the tank.
Here's the part number.
4WM-85752-00-00 SENDER UNIT

I would strongly suspect the sending unit inside the tank. It has a circuit board and little wire wipers that drag across different pads as the float raises and lowers. These wipers wear out. The only repair is to replace the unit.
Easy enough to check. Let the tank run down so that you have to switch to reserve. Drain the rest of the gas into a clean container. Remove the tank. On the bottom you'll se a couple of bolts. Remove these and remove the sending unit. You'll be able to see the wipers against the board. If they're worn, order a new unit and gasket.

It's the sending unit (or a bad connection to it.) The gauge has an "averaging" ckt in it to prevent the needle from swinging around in turns and the like. I would suggest lifting the back of the tank a few inches, unplug the sending unit connector (usually a green two wire) and clean the connections. If that does not fix it, order the new float as BikerRon suggested.
Just remember it will take a few minutes (about 10) to show an accurate indication. On that subject, the gauge should go to the "last remembered indication" at turn on.

This is what you'll be replacing. Pay attention which way the float's arm is positioned when you remove it. Been known to be installed pointing the wrong way.
Do not force it during installation. Don't want to bend the arm out of adjustment or break the plastic parts. Can be a bit of a Chinese puzzle, sometimes. Go slow and ease it back in.

Yah, that sending unit inside the tank is a known failure part. I had to replace the one in my 99 a couple years back and now the one in my 06 is on the way out as well... it's pretty easy to replace, just take your time.

Mine hasn't worked for years. I just go by the trip meter.

Mine works but I go by the petcock. I get different mileage depending on the conditions. When I switch to reserve I start looking for fuel.

It's an unnecessary luxury. Just look in the tank if you want to know how much gas you have (old school method). If you are one of those anal retentive types who has to have every little thing working, then spend the money. The thing I find amazing is that you have been a member here 5 years and this is your first post. A true testament to the dependability of the Road Star.
