Battery question, opinions wanted.. 4 Years, 11 Months ago
|
|
Finally got my bike on the lift today to get it all set for the year.
I let the battery trickle charge for about 4 hours, hit the starter button and it turned over a little slower than normal but still fired up.
I got checking with my DVM and had 12.70 at the battery, but would drop to 10.65 when cranking.
I checked it at the relay and starter and both were 12.60 while cranking.
I did clean all the connections and even the ground wire while it was charging.
The batter is only 2 years old but I'm curious if it needs replacing already or is that voltage considered normal?
Thanks,
RussB

12.7 is about normal voltage for a 12 volt battery with the motor not running. If you only have 12.7 volts when running, your charging system may be bad.

Russ, has your battery sat for a substantial period without being charged, and you just tried to top it up?

when I put the bike up for the winter, I trickle charge the battery for 6-8 hours. When I un cover it in the spring, I charge the battery again before ever cranking it.
While running, it will charge around 13.9-14.1...
My concern is that while cranking, it is around 10.6 volts and cranking a little slow. I always thought it should be above 11.0 while cranking..

Get yourself a set of Erbmans wires, a warrior starter relay and it will turn over much better. A good 310 cca battery and a warrior started will top the system of. I made all those changes on my 05 and it doesn't turn but one rev before it starts.

I would do the test over making sure the your DVOM is working and is connected properly. Your #'s don't make sense. If you only have 10.65 while cranking it would be impossible to have 12.60 at the relay & starter while cranking. If anything voltage at the relay and starter would be a tad lower due to a voltage drop thru the connections.

Regardless of your meter readings, if your battery sits in a constant state of discharge (which it is when it's not being charged)for a couple of months it diminishes it's capacity. That's why I keep battery tender pigtails on all the batteries, and just move the charger every two days from bike to bike to lawn mower, to car, etc. I make sure and get my money's worth out of the thing. Nothing in the garage goes more than 7 days without the tender hitting it overnight.

Thanks for this info, JD! Reinforces closely to what I have been doing.

Guess I didn't explain myself the right way. I have 12.7 with the key on but NOT cranking it over.
i checked it again today, WHILE cranking, the battery is 10.70, the wire at the starter lug is 10.65. I'm not losing much through the circuit, but I think the battery is just not up to par. What are you people getting at the battery and starter while cranking it over?
i will probably just swap out the battery anyhow, when in doubt, change it....
