Showing some love from Alvarado, Texas 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Sup guys, I got a 05 road star 1700 and finally decided to get on these forums. Recently I had to stop using the switch for my passing lights and just have them on with the headlight, damn thing kept blowing the fuse. Now, I'm waiting on a new fuel pump because the wires to mine are shorting out or something, if I wiggle them it comes on so time for a new one. Hope to learn a few things and meet some friends for the road.

from Iowa.

The general consensus here is that you don't need the pump. There are threads where this is discussed. I haven't done it myself as mine is fuel injected but I'm sure someone will give you the scoop.

Representing Scorpion Gulch, Arizona. Lose the fuel pump. I have been running my '06 4 1/2 years without one with no problems. Looks better too. (see pic)

from Richardson, Tx. I have a Harley-riding buddy who lives by the lake over there, that recently bought a Yamaha 950T.-He likes it better than the Motor Company products. I can't help you on the fuel pump issue, but then, I've never had any problem with mine.

I have been running mine for a couple years without a fuel pump.

It's one less thing to have to worry about breaking down when you are away from home.

From Plano Texas.

Start a new thread in the electrical part of the forum, and you'll get some good ideas of places to look regarding the lights. More then likely a short.

There is a thread in the "Tech Articles" section(see the tabs above)about changing the needle and seat, and going pumpless. You want to use the Yamaha OEM needle and seat set, that has the -30- in the middle of the part number. Don't use the Suzuki parts mentioned. See the 2015 update.
It's one of the first things I did on each of mine. It was pretty well established by the many who frequented the Forum long before I got here. If you have questions, and can't find the answers searching the forum(see the "Search Forum" in the blue banner above), post up your questions, and somebody will help you out. Most bikes over 10 years old should have the needle and seat replaced anyway, simply do to age. They will start leaking around the oring that seals the seat, before they leak in the seat area.
