Sudden trans fluid leak. 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
--

Moved my bike and there was a puddle on the garage floor. Either my radiator is leaking, some dog snuck in and peed, or it's transmission fluid. Let's go with the last one.

I took off my front drive gear cover and it seems to be coming from around the protruding gear area of the transmission countershaft (?) If so, what seals or o-rings do I need to replace and can I do it without knowing how to tear into the transmission? I've done brakes, oil changes, lights and some small stuff, but nothing internally technical.

Couldn't find any recent articles on RSC about the subject. Would appreciate any thoughts and/or part numbers. I looked up some numbers but I don't know if those are the parts I need.

We don't have transmission fluid as the tranny is in the engine case. What you are leaking in all probability is gear lube from the transfer case. You need to make sure everything is torqued to spec, especially the front pulley nut

Thanks for your quick response. Would gear lube leak past the oil seal and O-ring if the front pulley nut was not tight enough?

My bike developed a leak behind the front pulley (it was tight). Replaced seal and no more leaks. If that's what you have, it's engine oil, not gear lube.I think

Huh? If you replaced the seal behind the front pulley, that'd be gear oil in there that was escaping.

That's where mine seems to be leaking from--right behind the pulley hub. Would I have to pull off the end of the trans housing by that countershaft to replace the o-ring? And would I need to replace an oil seal too?

No it's gear lube. Yes it can leak because the pulley nut is loose but I'd replace the seal if it was my bike. Also when you reinstall the pulley and nut use RED loctite and torque to spec. Search the forum for front pulley nut maintenance. You do not want it coming loose. Bad things happen

So can I replace the o-ring (#23) and oil seal (#22) from the outside and just behind the pulley? Or do I have to open the case?

One post a while back mentioned a small slot to place a small screwdriver into so as to pull out the oil seal. Has anyone done this?
