My "05" has a 172.5 main with the clip in the 3rd position and the spacer and 2 washers. Seems to work best for my 1700. I also went with a 40 pilot.

Mine is 172.5/40 clip on 4th groove. Thanks to Dave J in Celina. Bike has never run better.

167.5 is good for a 1600 but not for a 1700 use a 172.5 or if you have open pipes no baffle a 175 try 4th slot first. If your not happy with that then go to 3 slot, spacer, 2 washers.

The info from from Mr. Tidy's Tech Tips says:"Do not disconnect the throttle Position sensor from the Carburetor."
How do you remove the carb from the motor with out doing this? Does it refer to the actual mechanical part or is it safe to remove the plastic portion? May sound stupid, but.................

Follow the wire from the carb to the plugs and disconnect them there. He is refering to taking the TPS off the carb itself.

So what would happen if the black plastic cover is removed?

If you remove the TPS then you must use an ohm meter and reset it to the proper setting. If you are novice mechanic and aren't familiar with the use of an ohm meter it can be quite a task. There is an article in the tech articles that instructs you on how to set it as well as a section in the service manual.
