Gas Gage Voodoo, new owner Needs advise 7 Years, 1 Month ago
So new to me a 2004 Road Star 1700, bought it with fuel gage showing 1/3 tank , road a few short ride around the hood ta check her out . Went to the gas station today filled her up and departed and noticed the gage still on 1/3 ish tank , then the fuel gage after a few mins dropped to Empty and low fuel light came on. Hmmmm , stopped and started a few times but the same thing.... So is there a reset of any type or should I just disconnect the battery for a second to reset all of the electrics ???? Any Info Would be appreciated !!!

Save yourself a lot of grief. Ignore it.
Set trip meter to zero, fill tank, when it hits reserve note how many miles you traveled.
Then use trip meter EVERY time you fill up. Or do like I do, open cap and look in and always fill up before very ride.

I have the same problems with my wifes trike. I shut off the power smack the dash a couple of times with my hand and then turn the power back on and the thing works again. Even the speedo is effected but like I said after I get pissed and slap it around everything is fine for a while.

You need a new sending unit in the tank. Do it yourself and save some bucks. Very easy to do.

If you just got the bike, I would check the wiring harness that goes to the dash. Don't forget to check the green harness that comes out from under the rear of the tank, under the seat. Something might just be loose.

It's like what they told me in Fire Fighter school, "Try before Pry" they were speaking about doors. Try the door knob before you axe the door. What I'm getting at is try the easy stuff first. Take you seat off, and take the tank bolt out, there is a green wire with a disconnect. Take that apart and clean the connections and try it.

I have the same issue (but only affecting the gas guage). Has this ^ ever worked for anyone that has had this issue? I mean cleaning the connections... I tried cleaning the connections and used dielectric grease on all connections and nothing. I have the tank off the bike right now and when i get some time i am going to take the sending unit out. There is lots of threads here on this issue... lots of reading and good info.

Ok so far 1) Tapped area with towel and rubber mallet ,2) Disconnected battery and re connected,3) Unplugged green connector and flushed with contact cleaner ( it looked totally clean ) ... still no workie... Sooooo suggestions on a vendor that would sell a sending unit for a 2004 RS 1700

#32 on this page.

Sixty bucks.. Or you can take it apart and see if it is something that you can fix. Might be jammed by a giant wad of cash that was stashed in the tank by DB Cooper...

Since your in scottsdale I would look up a yamaha dealer near you for the sending unit. I don't think you will find it anywhere other then a dealer. Check Ridenow power sports in Chandler.
