i guess if u leave the cone intact that would be like stage 3/4's(less than 1), stage 1 is when the cone is removed per the tech instrux, this could be a little clearer in the tech section. we should update that.........i would have tried leaving the cone first. I do like the sound/volume. it sounds harley-esque, am I a bad ass now?

What Fireman said! +1
You will end up going Stage III. I started where you did because I didn't want it to be too loud. It wasn't and Stage III is louder, but not irritating. It has a really nice rumble with the stock pipes.
I went with some New Freedom True Duals so I could lower the passenger foot pegs for the wife (Yeah, ok, for the look and sound too.). There is a member that made his own dual pipe from stock mufflers and aftermarket pipes. I don't remember who, but they looked great and I'll bet the sound awesome! It was pretty cheap too as I recall.
Ratl.

SO if i removed cone and drilled 4 holes 1/2 in holes, Am I stage 2? i HAVE STOCK carb setup, except grizzly valve and I have a F pump. I have a KN oval filter RA0768V.
DO I NEED TO REJET? It runs good, does not backfire on decell, needs choke to start, idle is lower when cold with enricher, but is good when hot.

The drilling of holes in the muffler is called stage 1 and is only referring to the stage that your exhaust is drilled to. You are at stage 1 of 3 stock exhaust drill stages.
Yamaha's reference to stage 1 is jet kit, ignition module, and Bak
Yamaha's stage 2 is jet kit, ignition module, Bak and aftermarket exhaust.

Stage 1 exhaust mod is 8 X 1/2" holes in the first baffle plate, after the cone is removed... Stage 2, is to go all the way down with a l-o-n-g drill bit and drill the same 8 X 1/2" holes thru the second baffle plate deep in the muffler.
Don't know who has ever done that... most go from stage 1 to stage 3, and just rip all the guts out.
I did!
