Am i out of gas? 3 Years, 8 Months ago
|
|
NO, im clearly not out of gas, and my fuel gauge shows im 1/4 inch above the E line and my light isn't on.
now ive ALWAYS ran my bike with the petcock in the ON position. until my light has been on for a couples miles.
Now just taking it for a ride, im cruising like i always do.. and the bike dies as if im out of fuel or i turned the petcock to OFF... so I pull over to check my tan...im good on gas, still got like 40 miles left.. and so i then turn it to reserve and it starts up runs normal. so i ride it around and then turn it to ON. and the same thing.. but i clearly am no where needing to change it to reserve?? at least i never have changed it before without the light on and the gauge on the E line..
what made that change now?

Put just a little bit of gas in it maybe about a gallon and see if it is OK. The reason I say 1 gallon is maybe the pick up tube in the tank is plugged. If it is it will be easier to deal with without a full tank. Just a guess.

Sending unit stuck and maybe less gas in there than you think?

Fuel pump? As long as your tan is okay, then try what Dave mentioned. Is your pump running more then usual?

I drive it til it sputters and reserve we go. I know within 2 mpg what my mileage is at any given time, and I always use my #1 trip meter to track my mileage since a fill up. The gauge ( the light and the needle) are just not as reliable or useful info as miles since the fill up. That being said, it's not odd to have varnishing on the stand pipe screen if your bike is stored with untreated fuel, and with less than a full tank.
Not to mention corrosion and/or moisture can change the resistance of the fuel gauge circuit.

I have this same issue it started just after putting the HSR 42 on and loosing the pump. I assumed it was due to that, maybe needing the different petcock, so I'm very interested in what the outcome is.

Alright, so i went out to my bike this morning, gas light is on but the gauge wasnt on the line. Still 1/4" above. never had those two like that usually light is on only once i hit the line..
so i checked the gas again before i went to get more. I was low and was needing to be on reserve to get fuel to flow.
my mileage was at 153 and took 4.6 Gal to fill up, also added 5 OZ. of SeaFoam just to get a good clean.. it now is running with the petcock in the ON position.. everything is good and if happens again. well... ill just go with it... lol
Thanks!

When I fill up, right after having to switch to reserve, I can always put about 4.1 gallons in the tank. You were well into reserve, at 4.6 gallons.
