I love the new Street Glide, was planning on getting one in a few months. But at my local Bike Night tonight, of the 100 or so bikes, there were 25 Street Glides or other FLs made to look like a Street Glide. I had the Best Looking(only) Road Star there, I kind'a like that.

We do have a couple of local riders who have very high miles on their harley tourers (I am not certain just which harley they ride but it is a bagger for sure lol)

All they have done is keep them maintained as scheduled. almost 100k miles on the one that I know of for sure, he finally had a power plant rebuilt for it. However we did find him by the side of the road shortly after he got his bike back, because he didn't insist that the shop rebuild the tranny as well, which he admitted he should have done. We sat and visited with him til Greg arrived with the trailer...

Bike looked good too, well cared for and he rides everywhere, pretty much year around.

my mechanic told me that the newer harleys in particular are pretty reliable, built for comfort for what they are made for and have a ton of options available which is why people buy them.

he said yes they cost more, and their maintenance costs more because to keep it maintained properly there is MORE to be done then on the average metric bike.

so, if you have the budget that can afford this, and you like what harley produces, ride one! =)

It's all good long as you are in the wind!

there is a street glide I fell in love with at the dealership, however, my roadstar is within my current budget, and actually fits the bill quite nicely. I am happy, I have a sweet motorcycle, I can afford the payments, and I still have money for gas etc and I can look forward to many many years ahead, with what I have read in this forum about the high mileage folks get with these bikes.

Well there's the 94 Electraglide Classic that Peter and Kay put 379k riding around the world. If you look into it, though, it needed a new engine at 330k and before that some sort of major overhaul every 50k-100k. Would a Roadie have been able to do it better? 25,000 miles a year for 15 years straight. Maybe if it was all in the US, but start taking the roads and conditions of Africa, South America, the Middle East, and Russia into account and I doubt it. Would have had a cracked frame at the rear shock for sure.

EDIT: Forgot to point out they claim the gearbox and lower end of the motor are entirely original, and have never been removed from the bike. That's pretty strong right there.

Well I put a little over 100miles on the Harley today and I love it. I still love the Roadstar too though, I'm not putting either down or bashing either.

The best comparison I can come up with is this. My 1990 ex-police package Mustang had 305hp at the rear tires, Tremec 6spd, 3.73 gears, loud exhaust, full Kenny Brown suspension with Koni shocks and welded subframe connectors. It would run low 13's in the quarter on street tires, handled like it was on rails and you could feel every rock you ran over the suspension was so stiff. Now that car was pure muscle, unadulterated raw power, smoke the tires in third gear power!

Compare that to a newer Mustang, while they are not quite as powerful, they are fast, they are comfortable, they have abs, cruise, nice stereo, cushy ride, they're a little more refined and nice.

That's how I'd compare a Roadstar to a StreetGlide, the RS is pure torque and power while the SG is more refined and comfortable while still having adequate power. Of course I'm comparing a RS that is 10yrs old vs a SG that is 2yrs old. Just my 2 cents.
