Forgot how to dial pms and idle 2 Years, 11 Months ago
In an effort to get the roadie running, I took off the tank, turned the idle up and down a dozen times, turned the PMS in all the way, took the filter off, shot it with ether a few times, have the tank off. I need to start over, but the problem is I don't remember how to get a base setup.

If memory serves(probably not) PMS should have been 1¼ turn out, but I don't remember how to get a base line for the idle. I took off a plug wire and stuck a screw driver in, it's definitely getting spark. It fired twice but wouldn't stay, so I think all is good, I just have my settings so out of whack. Pilot is 40, 180 main, pumpless, the air filter is off, the tank is off, and I'm trying to get it firing on ether for now with minimal success. Once it's running, I'm fine. It's just getting it running so I can figure out where I stand and make adjustments.

That main sounds big, unless it's a DynoJet main jet, but all aside, start with 2 turns out on the PMS.

Careful trying to fire electronic ignition bikes without a plug attached to the wire. These are not high powered (high ratio) coils, but you can still have the coil short fire internally and smoke it like that. Always needs a plug on the wire with the base grounded. Make sure your battery is topped up, all accessories off, and your kill/safety switches are in the proper position. Side stand down, bike in neutral (neutral light ON), emergency shutoff switch is in the RUN position, fuel petcock on RESERVE, unless you are positive tank is full, and fresh or winterized fuel in the tank. The spark is not exactly a flame thrower on these bikes, but it gets the job done, just might be hard to see in daylight.

If you still have the pump, drain the carb bowl (the screw is easiest to reach from the left side with a long extension and allen driver) then turn the key on and make sure the pump runs.

if you have the tank off it wouldn't hurt to pull the plugs to see if they are wet with fuel. I would even spray them with a little starting fluid and the hit it with a propane torch to insure that they are clean and dry.If you have irridium plugs don't try to clean them with a wire brush or anything else other than a spray, you will break the tip on the plug. Have you tried draining the fuel bowl to make sure that you aren't trying to burn bad gas or possibly fuel with water in it. and as JD said make sure the battery is topped off. These things will turn over but not have enough left to fire the bike.

Thanks JD, I think the issue is fuel. I winterized in the fall, but it's still on the old side. I put hte petcock on reserve, new battery, it turns over plenty fast. I'm going to drain the tank and try a fresh can.

No pump, took the carb off and dumped it earlier. Hooked it back up and tried again. At that point it fired once on two separate occasions. Right now the tank is off. I may have a 50 pilot now that I think about it. The fact that it's not firing on ether is what really is getting me right now. EVERYTHING should fire with a shot of ether.

What about the idle screw? I've turned it back and forth so many times, I don't know where I am and would like to start over with it.

The 50 pilot comes in a speedstar kit and it is way too big, put a 40 in it. If it is a Speedstar kit it will have a Mikuni main jet. If it does have a mikuni the main jet is also too big. If it is a dynojet brand main jet it is the right size for a 1600. With a 50 your plug are probably black with soot and need to be cleaned or replaced. I would personally just clean them like I stated above.

This is what you jetting says in your profile which if in fact it is what you actually have then you are good.
Needle Clip: 3
Jet Manufacturer: Mikuni
Main Jet Size: 170
Pilot Jet Size: 37.5
PMS Turns Out: 2.5
BUT if you have what you posted your are jetted WAY TO RICH. Put fresh gas in the tank drain the fuel bowl on the carb and let it fill with new gas. Choke the carb and give two quick twists of the throttle to get rid of bad gas in the accelerator pump and crank the bike.

My profile is right, I just forgot it was there. I'm rather absent minded.

Spark plugs were BLACK. Cleaned one with a brass brush and shot ether and it fired right away. Cleaned the other 3 and shot it with ether and it sounded like new.

If only everything was as easy to work on as the roadie, life would be perfect. Even other bikes I've owned don't compare. One bolt, 2 hoses, and a clip and the tank is off.

Looks like what I have in there the bike doesn't consider gas.
