Wobbly front end 12 Years, 11 Months ago
Most noticable on deceleration from 40 mph down to 30 mph, worse @ 35 mph my front end wobbles almnost to the point of losing control if I do not hold on to the bars tightly. Below 30 mph it smoothes out and above the 40 mph on decel there's no problems. I've tried having the tire balanced twice from two different places, and still the problem persist. Any suggestions of what I can do to pinpoint his problem. The forks are tight with no play. The front tire has @ 13k on it, and I am thinking of replacing it along with the tube. Has anyone experienced this and what was the fix? I hate to have to bring this to a dealer to start tearing through the front end or trying different things which is only going to be mucho $$$$$. Thanks

If the forks are "forks are tight with no play" and the tire has been balanced then the tire may be cupped. However, you'd think the guys who balanced your tire would have noticed.

What do you mean by "forks are tight with no play"?

Replace the front tire ... while I have heard of tires lasting that long, that is WAY long and the first place I would look. And I agree with DOC, if they balanced it, they should have looked close at if it was worth the hassle. My stock Bridgestones did that at 2k, my Metzlers are like a rock.

I read that there may be sloppiness in the fork triple tree, where it may require tightening. When I had the bike up there was no play. I hope I'm explaining that correctly.

Crash - thanks. it's the OEM Bridgestone that's still on the front.
I put a Dunlop CruiseMax a couple of months back, so after your experience I'll go for a new thread up front. I hope that's the fix.
The guys at the local tire places, didn't mention cupping, but I am be recommended to a nother place, I hope can get this resolved.

The others have covered the typical causes, if the steering, head top and lower tree pinch bolts are properly torqued, bearings, tire is good balanced and wheel didn't take a hit... alignment seems fine, perhaps you have a problem with one of the tubes or short on fork oil on one side.

You state it happens on decel, you mean it happens when your on the brakes ?

Is it a Midnight front end ? It likely all that chrome then. !

YOU GOT 13,000 MILES OUT OF THE STOCK BRIDGESTONE?!?!?!?!

That is fer sure getting your money's worth ... now I KNOW it is your front tire. You swap that baby out and you will be stunned how good your roadie handles.

I have an 02' roadstar.I also had the same problem with my front end wobbling between 30 and 45 MPH. I tried everything, Execpt changing the front tire. The tire in the front was new. I ordered it on line and I don't think it was a good tire. After the new tire was put on my problem dissapeared. I had the tire balenced several times, I had the front and back alined , I had my front end tightened , you name it I did it. It turned out to be the front tire. When one of my tires becomes worn I always replace both the front and back, I like to keep the tread depth the same. Try changing your front tire, I'll bet it works.
Ride safe, but go fast!
