Oil change only takes 3 quarts. 6 Years, 6 Months ago
Sorry for a post that I am sure is dealt with already. Here goes. Followed the manual to do oil change. Replaced filter and drained the crankshaft and the oil tank. Refilled with Royal Purple 20W-50. Got the first 2 quarts in and ran the engine for 10 seconds or so (nervous about running without the full amount of oil). Got another quart in and it started overflowing. Ran it again, and the fill tube dropped but the dipstick still shows about 1 inch over the checkered part. Any redirects or straight up hints would be greatly appreciated. Not riding until I am confident. Thanks members.

It's ok to run it for a few more seconds than that. The oil tank evacuates pretty quickly, but 10 seconds might be a bit quick.

If you're sure you drained it all out, and with three quarts in, run it for a few minutes and drop in the other quart. It's always four quarts, nothing more, nothing less. And, don't trust the dipstick... (and I don't mean Jona)

But, if after running it for a few minutes, it still overflows, you might have a bad oil pump gear. If the recall wasn't done and it sheared off, it won't pull oil from the tank. If you already have three quarts in, then that's probably not the issue.

Only thing I can think of is you didn't get all the oil out or you didn't run the engine long enough.

The dipstick wont read right unless you fallow the stupid ten minute drive then shut the bike off stand on your head and drink milk thru your nose process. So dont even bother with it. And if you are worried about running the engine dry next time you do a oil change there is a allen plug behind the rear jug that if you remove it you can pour 2qts right into the case then 2qts into the tank and your done(thats what I do)

All I can recommend is don't put the oil in the dip stick hole.
I did that a couple of times and both times it over flowed at 3 qts. I stick to the fill oil between the jugs
