man just get on the highway and go. Be careful of the semi trucks Yeah it can get hairy but you have more places to go than down low when someone pulls in front of you or tries to run you over. A lot of semi drivers are bikers too. I have tasted rust up on the highway but I have tasted it more down low. When I ride the highway I usually use right lane and stay closer to the center line mind ya not on it or you will be toast. That way you are more visible to others. Taken from the words of an old biker ( Sonny Berger ) Hey the left hand lane is for passing . When we ride in packs you will notice whether ridind flat out or just cruising we use the right hand lane. I do agree that if ya want to see America take the U.S. highways ie 2 lanes . There is so much to see and so little time to see it in..

I usually change my oil and fluids before heading out, pack my Tour Master bag, pack for any weather between 150 degrees above to below and point her West and ride. I can do 750 miles to Rolla Missouri in one day if I am in the right state of mind.

PS and that was before I got my cushy Ultimate Seat!

I've had plenty of motorcycles, and they were all capable machines on little two-lane highways. This is the first fire-breathing monster I've ever owned, that is capable of handling the super-slab. I've not had reason to get out there yet, but the prospect is no longer so intimidating.

I have the same itch for the road trip. I am planning to take a trip down the NC coast seeing all the lighthouses and catching all the boats to cross the water. It will give plenty of rest time for that leg of the trip. Plan to head across NC toward the Blue Ridge PKWY and into TN. Thinking of heading for the Dragons Tail. Heard it is a good ride. Then back to VaBeach. Plan to take a week so no real hurry. Good luck on your adventure.

I remember back in the day taking my Yamaha 550 Maxim on a road trip and thinking it was the boss dog in the pack..

I would have died knowing one day I would be riding one of these beasts!
And Frank, all you need is gas! Stop for gas and a quick pee and ride on!

We get some long trucks here, 53.5m long(175.5 ft) And its two lanes just about every where with the occasional overtaking lane. I love overtaking them but i think its because i can drop down a cog and go WOT. Love the sound of my Warlord Ripsaws! My First Big trip was a bit over 5000km over 5 1/2 days. It was a memorable ride for two reasons, It was my first long trip and it was to attend my sisters funeral. Not the best of circumstances but i rode safe cause i had to arrive. Stop whenever you want, not just for fuel or food and only ride when you would normaly be awake.

I've been riding since 1966, had 2 accidents, was on my 67/BSA Spitfire driving a buddy to his Dads and on the way back a guy on a small bike made a quick right with no indication and I hit him and car hit me. Lost my right eye (blind now) and 1 on my R* a month after I got it, a guy ran the stop sign in his pick up, so I layd her down, better than straight on. Lots of bruises.
The point being is that I am always wathing my surroundings and alot of times just watching the other drivers I get a sence that, hey! get away from him cause he's not paying attention. It save my but a few times. I like to be in he right lane or 2nd from right beings the left eye is doing all the work.
Plan on going to Americade then keep going East and up along the seaboard to St.John New Brunswick, then to Nova Scotia to see my Mom, she's still kicking at 91 and in good health.
I know this long but thats my story!

Hi Frank. I agree with most everybody. Always keep an eye out for where you might need to go to get away from anyone/everyone on the road. The only exception I have to staying in the right lane is when the highway is passing through town with lots of traffic getting on and off the road. Then I sometimes choose the far left, particularly in heavy traffic. Sometimes those last minute lanechangers and erratic mergers zooming into on/offramps can miss seeing you! I'm looking forward to May 24. Thats when I leave the world behind for ten days. See you on the road!
