did something stupid, need advice... 7 Years, 11 Months ago
I went to start my 01 roadie for the first time this season and forgot to turn the fuel to on. After a few times attempting to start it the bike went dead. There was a slight burning smell afterwards. The battery is not taking a charge. Do I just need to replace the battery or could there be something more seriously wrong? I can't believe what a bonehead move I did. Any mechanics out there with some advice?

You need a battery anyway so that would definitely be the first step and will probably fix it. You should be fine. Let us know either way.

How old is the battery? If it is the flooded type, does it have water in it? Batteries do not like to be sitting idle for long periods as the plates will sulfate. If you add water to any battery, make sure you use distilled water. The minerals in tap water will kill a battery quick. Make sure your post connections are very clean and tight. Also you might want to add a coupla shots of Seafoam in your fuel tank along with some fresh fuel. My thoughts are your battery might be toast...

great hints for you but for sure if that is the original battery replace it. Or else it will croak on you in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also get a battery tender. Unfortunately motorcycle batteries are small and live a tough life.

If battery won't take a charge, take it out and try again, if still no, make your way to get a new battery, i don't think you hurt anything, I have done same thing lots of times with no ill effects.

Great! Now apply for that RSC Visa/Master Charge and spend some time here, and spend some money here, and there! You'll need the 5K limit.

Might want to look your battery cables over good. That burning smell may have been the positive cable getting hot. Check the insulation on the positive cable. If it is just discolored, it is probably okay. However, make sure the insulation sleeve it not melted in any spots.

Sitting around the fire station yesterday and a coworker said "i love the sound of that roadstar, go outside and crank it so I can listen to it". I head outside and start it like normal, and all the starter does is start clicking.

I told him I was glad he wanted to listen to it, or I wouldn't have made it home this morning. Luckily the parts store was still open. I had forgotten how expensive they are. Not sure how much you guys pay for your batteries, but mine was $65
