is it time to change 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I've notice on my 07 RS that when turning my steering feels loose sometimes. I thought I needed to tighten the upper and lower ring nut under the upper bracket on the steering head. But when I put on the jack the steering column didn't flop to one side or another witch is a sign of them being loose. I did notice a little catch while turn the handle bars from left and right. Is it time to change the upper and lower steering head bearing? thanks for you advice and help.

If you felt a little "catch" you likely have a bad lower stem bearing and race.

it's slight catch, is it something that needs to be changed out right away or so you think it might be o-kay until this fall or winter project. is it a dangerous thing to be riding around with?

It's not too difficult to check the lower bearing and race. Once you have the top plate removed and the bike's front end off the ground, remove the top nut and begin slowly removing the bottom nut. As you loosen it, the front end will begin to drop. When the top nut is removed, you can remove the top bearing and inspect/regrease/replace. You can also inspect the bottom bearing once the front end has dropped enough. You may want to put a block or two under the front tire to keep the front end where you want it. If the lower bearing looks okay, you can try working some fresh grease into it without removing it (although it's not as good as removing it). If it needs replacing, well, that's a whole different animal. My RS has about 17k and is an 06. It failed the "flop" so I checked the bearings, which were fine, relubed, put everything back together and tightened, installed some grease fittings on the steering head and pumped it full of grease. You'll probably need some help when you get ready to put it back together - someone to thread the nuts on the steering stem while you hold it in place (don't forget the rubber washer in between the two nuts). I used channel lock pliers to tighten just enough not to fail the flop. Seems to be fine. Hope yours will be too. HTH
