Doc, a jetting question. 11 Years, 6 Months ago
Doc, you seem to be the guy answering the most carb related questions, so let me bounce one off you. I just traded in my sabre and bought a new 1700,and like many , I am doing a few things to suit my style. Back to the question. I added a k&n filter to an otherwise stock airbox,a roadhouse 2into1 exhaust system and jetted the carb with a dynojet kit on stage 2 (their pilot, their needle on the 4th groove from the top (put in stock spacers and washers in original locations) and installed a dj200 mainjet. Also set fuel mixture screw at 3 turns out. This seems alittle rich to the nose meter. I know carbs pretty well, but this is my first big twin/single carb bike. I dont mind pulling it back out , but this time I would like to get it right. And one more thing, I'm not a red light throttle blipper, but I generally give my bikes a quick blip as I pull off from a stop, and this bike responds by trying to stall. It has done it since new, now it seems to be alittle worse.Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You have assumed correctly that the DJ200 is too rich.

I would first put in a DJ 180 and try the WOT test to see what happens. You can go up or down down from there depending on the results.

Once you have the main jet correct you can fine tune the other circuits if needed.

BTW ..... best not to blip the throttle as this just aggravates the stalling .... plus it decreases the gas mileage.

Thanks Doc. That leads to more questions. My DJ kit does not appear to have a mainjet of that size. I have dj175 then dj190, can I order from them directly or will the dealer have something equivilent in stock? The main I removed was 182.5. Not the same? (or close). Thanks again.

i had about the same setup and was told the 200 was the main to put in.it kept coughing at red lights and i could see the black smoke when i reved the engine.since then i switched to a 190 and it runs much better, but i still think i am going to drop to a 185 for better gas mileage

The 182.5 is a Mikuni. The DJ and Mikuni sizes are not comparable.

You can try the 175 and see what happens. You can order just the sizes you want from whatever source is available to you; you don't have to order another 'kit'.

You can see from vegasdave's post that you can go quite low.

Vegasdave, you are running stock pilot but dj needle? Also using the dj175 main . Did you like the characteristic of the stock pilot over the one provided in the jetkit? Also , offtopic how did you get that pesky lower heatshield on the roadhouse pipe to line up front to rear. I've got mine about where I want it but it still could be better.Thanks,Dan.

DJ settings are just WAY too rich, went with the stock pilot(Doc again, just love that guy)thinking when I set it up might be lean so put DJ needle on 4th clip.
ALL the circuits merge alittle at some point.(Doc again).Went on a 650 mile trip
at this setting(plugs looked excellent)Also the pilot works way different than
say your main.
As for the shield,at the front pipe still does sit perfect at the front(dealer
did the install, had to get the left side pipe to sit right myself.
Me and my Bud cruise at 75 to 85 and I have Yamaha`s biggest windshield.
I average 40 mpgs 160 miles to the empty mark on my gauge(4 gallons)
