New Roadstar Owner 11 Years, 5 Months ago
Hi All I live in So Cal and just purchased a 2005 Roadstar Midnight Silverado. I bought it from a guy who rode it 314 miles and decided he was too scared to ride it and parked it his garage where it sat for several months. Anyways I have a 650 V Star classic that I modified all out and really love but I am kind of a big guy and it doesn't suit me on long rides. I am making my list of things I want to do to my R* I ordered Barons BAK, and Vance&Hines HP Power Shots to start with I am hopeing to get better gas mileage as I have been getting 17 to 20mpg with everything bone stock (my F-350 gets better!)The bike did sit for a while so I did a tank drain, oil/filter change, and new plugs before I rode it.
Anyone else have this bad of mpg with a stock R*?
Thanks for setting up this forum it is nice to talk to other R* owners!

Welcome to the Forum sm

When I first got mine I was getting 27 mpg and I thought that was bad. Yours is terrible. Something isn't set right. Along with maybe a happy wrist on the throttle .

Welcome,

That's very poor mileage.

Not to doubt your math skills (mine are certainly questionable at times) but are you calculating correctly.

At that mileage you should be blowing black smoke out the exhaust.

Thanks for the welcome. I barely passed math in school so I may be off but today I had to switch to reserve and my trip meter said 76 miles 5.3 tank 1gal reserve 76 divided by 4.3 = 17.6. When I changed the plugs right after I bought it (315miles) they were black powdery which usally means it's rich or the guy was riding with the choke on. When get my BAK I will clean the whole carb and rejet and I hope that will help.

I didnt check your math, I didnt have a calculator sitting here... but like you said its either running Rich,a clogged air filter or plugs that are running too cold for slow driving and I think you mentioned a scared driver .......Coug....

5.3 tank 1gal reserve

That can mess up your estimates right there. Unless you are positve you are beginning with 5.3 and you know for sure that you have only 1 gal (actually .92) gallons left when it hits reserve.

Let's say you are really starting with 4.9 and you have a long reserve tube that kicks in when you have a gallon and a half left. It's going to give you false bad news. Reserve tubes aren't all the same lenth and they don't all set the same in the tank. You can't take what the owners manual says as fact. You need to go by actual miles traveled and actual gas used. Try that for a couple tanks and see what happens.

Musky is right... Top up the gas tank and take note visually where the gas level is ..set your trip odometer... run her to 1/4 tank and top up again to as close a level as you did before and take note of the amount of gas used and the readin on the trip odometer Do the math.. try a tank on hwy then one around town and maybe both ..heck you can get good info from half a tank
