The higher end Fluke and Wavetech multimeters will use a Fluke accessory induction coil and perform this function as well, but you'll have a heck of a lot more than 50 bones in the setup.

My whole reason for posting was, when I was tuning on my Shadow 750, I had no idea when my idle was right, so I bought the EZ Tach. Been a very useful tool. Use it for the lawn mowers, the chainsaw, the Echo trimmer, anything with a motor.

Got to thinking that especially with the fun some guys have had with trying to get the bottom end of the fueling right, finding the correct idle point to tune in to might be a big help.

Great post JD, for those seeking the HD lub..lub idle. This is a Yamaha. Drop your idle to try and match what you think sounds "cool". You are starving the oil pump & motor to deliver.Great point JD, hope it helps the newbees.

I've written before, if text book oil pressure at 900 RPM is only 8 PSI, What is it at around 700 RPM? My answer is, too low for MY hydraulic lifters and 42 pound crank assembly! I'm not even fond of the idea of only 8 PSI at idle!

The lowest oil pressure I have ever seen on mine in the hot summer at idle is Between 20and 25psi. My idle when warmed up is around 900 but I used to have it set lower and still never seen it go under 20 psi, hot. Don't forget the book says min oil pressure @ 900rpm is 8psi. It don't say that is what the oil pressure is @ 900 rpm.

I get that that's not the standard for idle, but it IS the minimum standard. Any given bike may be producing a variety of pressures, depending on oil type, temp, age, pump conditon, etc. Still, it is possible for it to be that low and still be acceptable, so I tend to error on the side of caution.
May be just me, I don't know. Your mileage may vary, as they say. It would be interesting to put a calibrated 0-30 PSI Gauge on the galley and see what the drop is for a given RPM. Add on gauges are typically plus or minus 3-5% accuracy, that's why I say a calibrated test gauge would be good.

I've thought before about taking my Matco oil pressure gauge home and seeing what it is. I'm just not sure if I'll have anything to adapt to a mc application... Might see later on.

FYI, 8.5 PSI is listed as "standard" pressure, with no lower limit, at least in my old manual. The oil galley bolt, best I can identify, is 91314-05010-00. Based on the old timer's code of yammie bolts, that should be a 5MM bolt 10MM long. Thread pitch is likely .80.

That is about what mine is at idle ( 18 to 20) and it is set at 700rpm and my black one is set at 600rpm, they have been that way for several years.. If one blows up I will let you guys know! My bikes have been running fine, and I don't monkey with stuff that is ok... especially carbs. I set mine up to 900 and it sounded like it was running at half throttle... so I set it back...

Not saying it applies to the Yamaha engine or any other V-Twin, but for V-8 pushrod engines always ran with the old '10PSI per 1000RPM' as being 'safe'. If pressure drops as RPM increases, that's when it gets scary

I put my pipes on and air filter, bought a commander and idled it down to 600rpm, that was at 1500 miles. It currently has 42xxx miles on it and has never had to come apart except to put a Barnett clutch in it. When it idles you can count the pulses and watch the fender wag in sync with the engine. I checked the oil pressure once it was at 21 psi at idle. Seemed fine to me.

When I idle it faster it gets really warm at lights and the decel is all garbled.
