mig or tig? 5 Years, 6 Months ago
So my 14month old compressors tank cracked right at a weld. Its a little 1” long hairline crack but for obvious reasons i drain the air out and its just siting there now. I figure i can have the crack welded but should i have it done with a mig or tig welder?

I would prefer tig for that.

Tig would be best, but a welder may not fix it for you, it being a pressure vessel, could be a liability issue.

Shouldn't have too much trouible finding a welder to weld it (Tig has a smaller HAZ (heat affected zone)). It is a low pressure (175 to 190 max) and non-flamable storage tank. If it were higher than 250# then it all becomes a different story. My son does repairs like this all the time.

Jeeze, that sucks Smokes. 14 months old and it develops a crack? I have a 220V Sears compressor that was manufactured in 1989 and it's still solid.

Do you have any recourse with the manufacturer to get a replacement?

easy fix, I must have done a dozen similar to that over the years. The main thing is to get it good & clean before welding and make sure the tank is open so it dosen't build up pressure when it warms up while welding and cause a pinhole

mig, tig or stick will work. Depends how good ya are
