Gear oil check bolt stripped 5 Years, 8 Months ago
Yesterday I was changing my oil and gear oil. All was going well until I started to put the screw back in that you use to see how much gear oil is in the tank. The screw that is below the big screw that you use to fill the gear oil.

I put it in and it seemed to go in pretty easy but it wouldn't tighten. It would just spin and spin. It seems to be holding the oil but it is not tightened and it has me worried. When I removed the screw I saw metal shavings around the thread and my heart sunk.

What are my options? Can I just replace the whole chrome plate that the screws screw into? It has the allen bolts around the outside.

Thank you for any help.

Yes the plate can be replaced you might find one on e-bay and there are some nice aftermarket ones. Another choice is to pull the cover and dill and tap it for a little larger screw. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll talk with my father and see if he can help me.

Is it possible to purchase one of those threading tools and try to rethread without drilling?

What is that actual plate called in case I decide to replace?

I don't think you will be able to rethread it without drilling. Sounds like the threads are completely gone and the next size plug will need a bigger hole to start the tap. Still it should be an easy fix and cheaper than buying another cover for it.
