whistle noise with rpm change in neutral 6 Years, 8 Months ago
Hello,
I have been putting up with this noise since I bought my ride last October. It just drives me nuts....The bike has to warm up first...then it starts... As you increase rpms it gets higher pitched. You can hear the noise with the bike in neutral as you increase the throttle. (clutch pulled in). I have checked for air intake leakes and put new gaskets in the exhaust manifold......and still the noise survives.

2001 roadstar
ais removed
3 inch hk pipes.

Any ideas?

Is your air cleaner secured good? The only other thing I can think of would be that a vac line for the AIS was not plugged, and make sure the vent hose on the gas tank is still there. You have to remove the speedometer housing to check.

Check the plugs you have in the heads for the old AIS elbows. That or you may have a crack in your pipes some where.

Air cleaner is tight. It is not an air cleaner leak. Gas tank breather is fine. Intake manifold has t golf tee put in the line. not leaking....The noise is coming from the front jug. It seems like it is coming from the front of the bike. Is it possible to get a leak on the valve cover? I did adjust the valves last year....

I will check the ais plugs .....Maybe that is it....

It is not the ais plugs. Sounds like it is low and up front where the ais used to be. I will probably have to get louder exhaust..

you might take a look at the front fender tip to see if may-be there might be an air gap somewhere between it and the fender. Just a thought

And I noticed you don't have the pie pans over the front rotors with all of those round holes in the rotors.

OOPs you said it does it sitting still

Stopped by the yamaha dealer in Rice Lake and they took a listen for the whistle....He thought it was gear whining. He said nothing to worry about ...very common noise....

So I guess the louder exhaust or just ignore..... I am happy again...
