Intake Manifold Question 2 Years, 4 Months ago
|
|
After 8 years of owning and riding Ol' Grumpy, I have finally decided that since we are gonna get some ugly weather here in Louisiana I am going to Port my manifold. after removing it I noticed a "Brownish" coating on the manifold where it meets the heads on both side. Is there something I'm suppose to put on it before reinstalling it or just flat sand the film off?
Also do I need new O Rings (the originals still appear to be in good shape)...?

You really should buy a new manifold and surface the flanges before installing it. The old manifolds get hard and eventually crack from heat and weather. You should port to the bare metal and round the corners to the head runners then put one of these two sealers on the outside of the NEW 0-ring.
Permatex Permashield Gasket Dressing & Flange Sealant (this takes the place of Hylomar)
Send me your e-mail address and I will send you my installation instructions. I just shipped out a manifold and carb to BigWu and a manifold to WS324 in Germany today.

Get some real fine grit sandpaper (1000 or higher) or emery cloth. Place it on a flat surface and rub the manifold across until all of the brown is gone. O-rings are cheap and I would replace them. Also get some Hylomar (available at Grainger) or equivalent to add to the face when replacing. Tighten each bolt a little at a time and evenly, ramping up the torque to the final spec.
Or what Curt said!!!

Thanks Curt. I was real surprised to find that this manifold is like new, very pliable with not one crack. My email address is grumpyroger@msn.com, thanks for your help.
