First step is to just take it apart and clean it.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm happy with the slutty chrome starters that are sold on eBay.

(although they are now calling standard starters high-output there..)

Re:Help with starter motor 1 Year, 4 Months ago
wow i got in there, brush dust everywhere, at least one brush was retracted and not touching,(that splains why my voltmeter voltage did not go down when i pushed starter button) all 11 mm long, cleaned it up good, 800 emery with armature in the 18v drill on slow speed, cleeaned up black off commutator, cleaned out the grooves, did not disassemble brush plate. fired right up with no I, I , I dont wanna crack, I dont wanna crack I dont wanna crack ku ku ku ku ku ku end
good to go. used CRC electronic cleaner sparingly

clymers describes a lockwasher???? behind front cover, not present (2004), in mine. the armature does move end to en a few mm, is that normal?
tks

End play is normal for a starter armature.

Every exploded view of a Road Star starter I've seen from Yamaha's books show no lock washer used in the innards.
