Too many neutrals - won't shift up using clutch 7 Months, 2 Weeks ago
First decent ride since all the work this winter - all the others have been less than 10 miles - about 15-20 minutes in, low speed riding with a group, pulling away from a light and hit neutral between first and second. Pull up again, neutral, neutral, neutral. Coast into a gas station, shut bike off, rock it back and forth and get gears. everything in shift linkage is tight. Start it back up, first engages fine, hit neutral going into second, so I shift without the clutch and get second with a clunk. It will shift 2nd through 5th without using the clutch, but finds neutral otherwise.

No changes were made to the shifting components over the winter.

Could this be just sticky transmission cogs and dogs from sitting over the winter? I've never had any transmission problems with this bike prior to today.

Additional info - I put 4 ounces of Seafoam in the oil and rode it for 10-15 minutes shifting up and down. It's shifting better from 2 to 5 and back again, but still won't shift from 1 to 2 with the clutch. Pops into a neutral feeling until I pull up on the lever without the clutch - Big Clunk!

HELP!

I'm thinking linkage, did you make any changes in it? When I put forwards on mine I had a similar situation and all it took was some tweaking on the linkage adjustment.....

Try lubricating the foot shifter shaft.

Also, check clutch cable freeplay. Adjustment is under the boot at the cable's end by the hand lever.

Too much and the clutch will drag (not completely release) making shifting a chore.

If it's been sitting all winter, you really need to run it good and get it up to max operating temp. Go for a long ride. Then change the oil if it is time.

My adjuster is in the cable itself, as I use a HD clutch lever and Barnett cable.

Your first suggestion seems to have solved the problem - lubing the shift lever pivot. After all the maintenance I did over the winter, rebuilding the forks with new everything, repacking steering head bearings and swingarm pivot, changing out brake fluid, etc., I totally spaced cleaning and lubing the shifter

Just rode it after cleaning and lubing and it shifts like a champ again!

Thanks BikerRon! You're one of the reasons the RSC is a great place to come for answers

Ah, cool.

Now, before you put your oil can up, go around to the other side and do the same for the rear brake pivot shaft. It probably needs some love, too.

Yep, I completely forgot about that one too!
