Separating a stack of plates and discs that are under some decent pressure you need some mechanical advantage, but they give you a handle that is limited in travel. By the time your 2 inches of pull reaches the pressure plate it as been reduced to a fraction of an inch.

Think of a fulcrum.

The clutch plates are separated 'just enough' to break the bond between engine and rear tire. But, not entirely. There is some friction still in play from the oil that bathes the clutch and slight contact of all the clutch components
spinning at different speeds when the clutch is somewhat disengaged. (Jack up the rear tire and put it in gear with the engine running and clutch pulled and the tire will still spin from the clutch parts making slight contact.)

Now, add the heat. There's the enemy. Metal expands and these hot parts are swelling and taking up precious space between the clutch parts creating more friction and the circle begins. Add stop and go to the equation and an air cooled engine heats up even more when it can't shed heat while stopped. You guessed it. More expansion from heat.

The sequencial transmission motorcycles use have sliding gears and shift best when no torque is being applied to the gear sets. Add some clutch drag and it puts the whole mess into a bind.

Until they can get around the laws of physics and give us an easy pull clutch that'll really separate the clutch discs, we're pretty much stuck with what we got.

Maybe, we will evolve over time and have 12" long fingers so they can pull in a clutch lever that has 6" of travel.

Lube all the points on the linkage starting with the pivot shaft by your left foot, and squirt a little tri lube under the rubber boots, on the shift linkage knuckles.

all good points
im old skool. i was taught your in neutral B4 u come to a stop, unless a dangerous intersection, u leave it in getDAFCKoutQuick gear.

shores is right, easier to tap down to N, than up to N . SaMe theory as an infielder can pull up his glove faster than he can push it down on a fast groundball. so coach says keep glove down and pull up if needed.

downshifting thru all the gears at a traffic stop is a great way to wear out everything 50% faster, but sounds Kool.

I have had oil that smells like gas cause that, presumably from, not turning off the gas. it gets thinned.

sidebar.
my 91 y/o WWII neighbor asked me to start his generator prior to HURR matthew. I fired it up, it ran great, but i noticed it was DRIPPING oil at the Briggs and stratton oil fill round dohicky. then i noticed THE LEAKY SHIT LOOKED like piss thin, so i changed his oil, or should i say i changed his crankcase full of oil colored gas.!

he said, what do I owe you, I said you already paid for ALL OF US! (WWII). ,,,,,,,,,,,...........

I guess I'm lucky...my bike goes into neutral easier than any bike I ever had, rolling, sitting still from 1st gear, anytime. In 4 years I have never lubed any shifter points, or changed, or even checked the transfer case oil.

Like others have said; check clutch lever freeplay & lube everything.

Mine only shoots past N when it's cold. When it's warmed up I have no trouble finding N or any gear.

Really??? How'd you do that? You should do a write-up with pictures for the tech section. I'm sure most folk would like to do that mod.
