My day is getting progressively worse, I go to Lowes to try and match up the bolt and some dumbass woman runs into me in the parking lot. Naturally she claims I hit her, but gee, if I hit her why did my truck go sideways from the impact!

Oh well, no damage done to mine, she ran into the spare tire mounted on the back of my Pathfinder. Her brand new Jeep wasn't as lucky!

Hey RoadieFF, You must have four whEel steering on you pathfinder to make the rear end go sideways into her like that? )
She was probably on her cell phone or something, eh?
Glad to see it was only HER jeep that got bent.

Re:Did I glaze my front brake pads? 10 Years, 11 Months ago
hey couger: my bike has always made a distinctive sh, sh, sh noise coming from the front brakes, ive taken my front brakes off and found nothing wrong with them, i then removed both rotors and layed them down on a flat serface and didnt find any warpage, so i figured my brakes are making a noise so they dont have to here the engine. no really all i can figure is that whwn the disk are bolted in place then they warp slightly. sorry i didnt read all of the messages before writing this. maybe this might help someone else

Post edited by: dozer, at: 2007/03/12 07:11

I think some of the noise is just typical of the floating, drilled rotors. I remember when my Roadie was new when I pulled the front brake lever it made a sound like a bunch of mad bees. Either it has gotten better or I am used to it, but it still makes noise when using the front brake. Not so loud that it calls attention to me from other drivers. I have examined the brakes and find nothing at all wrong. In my expereience cross drilled rotors do make more noise than undrilled rotors. Of course the missing bolt will make the caliper float a little too.

You will notice the "shhh" sound when you have recently applied the brakes, the sound will disappear after a few miles of riding on some rougher pavement.
This sound is completely normal with dual-caliper/ dual disc setups. The brake pads are floating against the disc. If they were not floating tight against the disk, you'd have a mushy feeling in the brake lever and excessive lever travel...neither of which gives a confident feel of good braking.
You don't notice the noise in you car, but it happens on them too. Espacially on the drum brakes.

The "shhhhh" sound ain't nothin, try hittin the brakes with only one bolt holding your caliper......now that's noise. Apparently the caliper doesn't like being forced up out of it's normal position when the pads grab the disc.

Found a reasonable replacement bolt at Home Depot, not as nice lookin as OEM (not that the OEM one is all that) but it'll work until I find a stainless replacement. Blue loctite all around!

I actually managed to drive to Home Depot and back without someone running into me, I suppose my luck has changed for the better.

Post edited by: RoadieFF, at: 2007/03/12 10:59

Ace hardware (at least in this area) has a great selection of CHROME bolts , I've put many of bolt from them on my scoots. Just make sure that the brake hardware doesn't require grade 8 (I'm not sure) and then use chrome ,as I don't think chrome comes any higher than grade 5.
